Polyphenolic compounds are key elements in sectors such as pharmaceutics, cosmetics and food; thus, their physicochemical characterization is a vital task. In this work, the thermal behavior of seven polyphenols (-resveratrol, -polydatin, kaempferol, quercetin, myricetin, hesperidin, and (-)-epicatechin) was investigated with DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) and TGA (thermogravimetric analysis). Melting temperatures, enthalpies of fusion and decomposition temperatures were determined, and heat capacities were measured in the temperature range from 283.

We present the case of a 51-year-old man with Von Hippel-Lindau disease and a history of renal transplantation who developed a persistent, painful tongue lesion with episodes of significant swelling. Given his history of prolonged immunosuppression and elevated cancer risk, oral squamous cell carcinoma was a major concern. However, histopathological evaluation confirmed recrudescent herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection rather than malignancy.

Background: New surgeons experience heavy workload during robot-assisted surgery partially because they must use vision to compensate for the lack of haptic feedback. We hypothesize that providing realistic haptic feedback during dry-lab simulation training may accelerate learning and reduce workload during subsequent surgery on patients.

Methods: We conducted a single-blinded study with 12 general surgery residents (third and seventh post-graduate year, PGY) randomized into haptic and control groups.

Article Synopsis
  • Recurrent ovarian cancer patients, especially those resistant to platinum treatments, currently have few effective curative options, prompting a phase 2 clinical trial (NCT02853318) that combined pembrolizumab with bevacizumab and oral cyclophosphamide.
  • The trial included 40 patients and showed promising results, with a median progression-free survival of 10.2 months, a 47.5% objective response rate, and 30% of patients achieving stable disease for over a year while maintaining a good quality of life.
  • Comprehensive analysis revealed that increased T and B cell count and specific microbiome patterns correlated with strong clinical responses, suggesting that understanding the immune environment and gut microbiome could enhance future cancer treatment

The performance of all-polymer solar cells is often enhanced by incorporating solvent additives during solution processing. In particular, blends based on the model all-polymer system PBDBT:N2200 have been shown to have increased short-circuit current and fill factor when processed with dilute diiodooctane (DIO). However, the morphological mechanism that drives the increase in performance is often not well understood due to limitations in common characterization techniques.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the methyltransferase EZH2 is influenced by both chemical signals like TGF-β1 and mechanical signals from stiff environments, impacting gene expression and potentially advancing cancer and fibrosis.
  • Cells cultured on stiff surfaces along with TGF-β1 show increased EZH2 movement to the nucleus and higher levels of a specific histone modification (H3K27me3), which is crucial for regulating gene expression and inducing changes linked to epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT).
  • The research suggests that the activity of EZH2 relies on cellular contractility pathways involving Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) and myosin II, highlighting a way that stiffness and TGF-β1 work together to

We present an optical filter that is appropriate for use with Raman beams in atomic interferometry. This is a filter that lets the light of the two frequencies of the Raman pair go through and rejects spurious frequencies that may be close to the atomic resonance and cause decoherence. We characterized the filter's performance optically and also by shining the light into atoms in a Ramsey sequence, to look for decoherence effects from photon scattering.

The tumor microenvironment comprises various cell types and experiences dynamic alterations in physical and mechanical properties as cancer progresses. Intratumoral heterogeneity is associated with poor prognosis and poses therapeutic challenges, and recent studies have begun to identify the cellular mechanisms that contribute to phenotypic diversity within tumors. This review will describe epithelial-mesenchymal (E/M) plasticity and its contribution to phenotypic heterogeneity in tumors as well as how epigenetic factors, such as histone modifications, histone modifying enzymes, DNA methylation, and chromatin remodeling, regulate and maintain E/M phenotypes.

Cesarean scar defects encompass a spectrum of separation of the uterine layers that increase risk of uterine rupture during labor and delivery. When coupled with the presence of placenta accreta spectrum, a condition characterized by abnormal adherence to or invasion of the myometrium by the placenta, the risk of life-threatening hemorrhage significantly increases. As rates of cesarean delivery increase, it is important to understand the imaging findings typical of both conditions.
