Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of CT examinations using the ESR-iGuide in a hospital setting, analyzing 278 CT referrals from 2022.
  • Results showed that 70% of the exams were deemed "usually appropriate," but there was a notable mean radiation level difference between actual and recommended exams, raising concerns about unnecessary exposure.
  • The research highlighted a correlation between inappropriate exam referrals and factors like physician specialty and experience, particularly in the Emergency Department, stressing the need for better imaging referral practices.

  • There is a lack of consensus in literature about the impact of primary tumor location on survival rates for patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM), especially as most studies are based in Western populations.
  • A study conducted on 501 patients in Israel categorized tumors as right-sided or left-sided, finding that right-sided patients were older but left-sided patients had slightly better survival rates, though these differences weren't statistically significant.
  • Ultimately, the research suggests that in the Mediterranean population, the location of the primary tumor does not significantly influence survival after liver resection for CRLM.

  • Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) is considered a safe option for removing metastatic liver disease, particularly in older patients over 75, but data on its effectiveness in this age group is limited.
  • A study compared outcomes of patients over 75 (group 1) with those under 75 (group 2), noting differences in tumor location, surgical approach, and completion rates of pre-surgery therapy.
  • Findings showed that while HALS was effective for elderly patients, they experienced a slightly higher complication rate and lower 5-year survival rate compared to younger patients, indicating that it remains a viable option for treating colorectal liver metastasis in older adults.

Electron capture dissociation (ECD) is now a well-established method for sequencing peptides and performing top-down analysis on proteins of less than 30 kDa, and there is growing interest in using this approach for studies of larger proteins and protein complexes. Although much progress on ECD has been made over the past few decades, establishing methods for obtaining informative spectra still poses a significant challenge. Here we describe how digital quadrupole (DigiQ) ion isolation can be used for the mass selection of single charge states of proteins and protein complexes prior to undergoing ECD and/or charge reduction.

Macroautophagy/autophagy is a catabolic process by which cytosolic content is engulfed, degraded and recycled. It has been implicated as a critical pathway in advanced stages of cancer, as it maintains tumor cell homeostasis and continuous growth by nourishing hypoxic or nutrient-starved tumors. Autophagy also supports alternative cellular trafficking pathways, providing a mechanism of non-canonical secretion of inflammatory cytokines.

Gastric leak after LSG is a devastating complication, reported in less than 1% of cases. Consensus is lacking regarding the best approach to construct the sleeve, staple sizes, and reinforcement methods on potential leak development. In this study, we have compared the leak pressure of two different staple sizes in the resected portion of the stomach, immediately after its removal.

Background: Iron deficiency is highly prevalent worldwide and is an issue of health inequity. Despite its high prevalence, uncertainty on the clinical applicability and evidence-base of iron-related lab test cut-offs remains. In particular, current ferritin decision limits for the diagnosis of iron deficiency may not be clinically appropriate nor scientifically grounded.

Death associated protein 5 (DAP5/eIF4G2/NAT1) is a member of the eIF4G translation initiation factors that has been shown to mediate noncanonical and/or cap-independent translation. It is essential for embryonic development and for differentiation of embryonic stem cells (ESCs), specifically its ability to drive translation of specific target mRNAs. In order to expand the repertoire of DAP5 target mRNAs, we compared ribosome profiles in control and DAP5 knockdown (KD) human ESCs (hESCs) to identify mRNAs with decreased ribosomal occupancy upon DAP5 silencing.

Background: Coagulation testing provides a prime opportunity to make an impact on the reduction of unnecessary laboratory test ordering, as there are clear indications for testing. Despite the prothrombin time/international normalized ratio and activated partial thromboplastin time being validated for specific clinical indications, they are frequently ordered as screening tests and often ordered together, suggesting a gap in understanding of coagulation.

Methods: Based on a needs assessment, we developed an online educational module on coagulation for trainees, incorporating education on testing cost, specificity, and sensitivity.

Mental Health Practitioners (MHPs) have a unique opportunity to provide resources and support to those suffering from Long COVID (LC), the post infectious illness that often follows an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. In working with these individuals, MHPs can learn from the experiences of patients with another post-infectious disease known as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). ME/CFS was once thought to be a psychologically mediated disorder caused by deconditioning and the fear of exertion following a precipitating event such as a viral infection.
