Predicting survival after brain metastases in patients with bladder cancer.

Aims And Objectives: Because of its rarity, limited data concerning brain metastasis (BM) from bladder cancer (BCa) are available, so this phenomenon remains unclear. We aimed to contribute to understanding this unique patient population's clinical behavior and outcomes.

Methods/materials: This retrospective cohort study included 27 BCa patients with BM treated at our Cancer Institute between April 2009 and December 2022.

The effect of lower urinary tract substructure doses on side effects of cervical cancer image-guided adaptive brachytherapy.

Objective: Image-Guided Adaptive Brachytherapy (IGABT) provides a survival advantage in locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC). Although side effects are seen less with this technique, dose parameters that cause urinary side effects are still questionable. We aim to investigate whether the radiotherapy doses of the lower urinary tract substructures (LUSS) affect the urinary system side effects (USSE) of cervical cancer external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and the IGABT.

The Effect of Music on Anxiety, Pain Levels, and Physiological Parameters in Women Undergoing Brachytherapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of music on anxiety, pain, and physiologic parameters in women undergoing brachytherapy.

Data Sources: The study was conducted with a randomized controlled design between June and December 2022. Music intervention was practiced to the patients in the experimental group (n = 30), while no practice was given to the control group (n = 25).

Prognostic value of primary tumor and lymph node volumetric metabolic parameters at pre-treatment F-18 FDG PET/CT in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of volumetric metabolic parameters of pre-treatment PET/CT along with clinical characteristics in patients with non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Material And Methods: Seventy-nine patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma underwent F18- FDG PET/CT for pretreatment evaluation and included in this study. The patient features (patient age, tumor histopathology, T and N stage, size of primary tumor and the largest cervical lymph node) and PET parameters were analyzed: maximum, mean and peak standardized uptake values (SUVmax, SUVmean, SUVpeak), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) for primary tumor and largest cervical lymph node.

Determination of the factors contributing to depression and anxiety in advanced stage lung cancer patients.

Background: The diagnosis of cancer and initiation of treatment disrupt physical, emotional, and socio-economical stability of the patients by reducing the quality of lives and ultimately leading to depression and anxiety. We aimed to observe the indicators for anxiety and depression among lung cancer (LC) patients by comparing with other cancer (OC) patients.

Effects of palliative radiotherapy and bisphosphonate usage on bone turnover marker levels in cancer patients with osteolytic bone metastases.

Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the bone turnover marker levels according to bisphosphonate usage and radiotherapy (RT) in cancer patients with metastases in osteolytic pattern.

Patients And Methods: A total of 52 patients (13 males, 39 females; median age: 52 years; range, 37 to 78 years) treated with RT for osteolytic bone metastases between April 2005 and April 2006 were retrospectively analyzed. Bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), amino-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type I collagen (NTX-I), amino-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP), osteocalcin (OC), deoxypyridinoline (DPD), pyridinoline (PYD), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatinine, calcium (Ca), phosphate (P), magnesium (Mg), and 24-h urine Ca levels were measured in blood and urine before the initiation of RT, six weeks and six months after RT.

Introduction: Palliative care (PC) is a holistic philosophy of care that can only be obtained through the awareness of public and healthcare professionals, PC training and good integration into the health system. Depending on health system structures, there are differences in PC models and organisations in various countries. This study is designed to evaluate the current status of PC services in Turkey, which is strongly supported by national health policies.

Treatment of Periarticular Fractures of the Knee Using the Less Invasive Stabilization System: A Retrospective Clinical Trial.

Introduction Periarticular fractures of the knee in adults are generally treated with internal fixation. The Less Invasive Stabilization System (LISS) plate, developed by Arbeitsgemeinschaft Osteosynthesefragen (AO)/Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF) in the late 1990s, allows reduction and biological fixation through smaller incisions without violating periosteal blood supply. It offers several advantages for the treatment of complex periarticular fractures of the knee.

The contribution of hospital-based home health services in pulmonary diseases: Current Practice in Turkey.

Background: The medical management of chronic respiratory diseases becomes more difficult with the increase in the rate of the elderly population. Monitoring and treating chronic respiratory diseases at home are more comfortable for both the patient and their relatives. Therefore, countries need to develop policies regarding home health services (HHS) according to the state of their social, cultural, and financial infrastructure.

COMPARISON OF RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION AND CURETTAGE IN OSTEOID OSTEOMA IN CHILDREN.

Objective: Osteoid osteoma, which is observed in the adolescent and young adult population as benign bone tumors, appears as a single nidus with a diameter < 2 cm and is treated with open surgery. However, technological advances in medicine have made it possible to apply less invasive procedures in surgery.

Methods: Between 2006-2014, 24 patients < 18 years of age were treated for osteoid osteoma.

The relation between chondromalacia patella and meniscal tear and the sulcus angle/ trochlear depth ratio as a powerful predictor.

Purpose: To investigate the relation between chondromalacia patella and the sulcus angle/trochlear depth ratio as a marker of trochlear morphology. In addition, we also planned to show the relationship between meniscus damage, subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness as a marker of obesity, patellar tilt angle and chondromalacia patella.

Methods: Patients with trauma, rheumatologic disease, a history of knee surgery and patellar variations such as patella alba and patella baja were excluded.

The treatment of intertrochanteric fractures comparison of PFN and hemiarthroplasty 3-year mortality study.

Intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients can increase mortality due to complications and negative functional results. The aim of this study is to retrospectively compare the follow-up and mortality rates among patients given a proximal femoral nail (PFN), the current routine treatment for these types of fractures, with those given hemiarthroplasty.The study retrospectively investigated 202 patients over the age of 60 who completed at least 3 years of follow-up after hemiarthroplasty or PFN for intertrochanteric fractures between 2007 and 2012.

The Efficacy of Boric Acid Used to Treat Experimental Osteomyelitis Caused by Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus: an In Vivo Study.

We explored the ability of local and systemic applications of boric acid (BA) to reduce the numbers of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a rat model of tibial osteomyelitis (OM), and compared boric acid with vancomycin (V). Implant-associated osteomyelitis was established in 35 rats. After 4 weeks, at which time OM was evident both radiologically and serologically in all animals, the rats were divided into five groups of equal number: group 1, control group (no local application of BA or other medication); group 2, V group; group 3, local BA + V group; group 4, local BA group; and group 5, local + systemic BA group.

Investigation of knee pain in osteoarthritic and neuropathic pain awareness.

The mechanism of neuropathic pain (NP) and osteoarthritic (OA) pain, although different, are both defined as chronic pain, and combinations are possible. In this study, the awareness of both types of chronic pain was investigated among patients and doctors. This prospective study was planned and coordinated by the orthopedic and internal medicine clinics and included 100 patients with a diagnosis of knee OA evaluated with the DN4 questionnaire.

Objective: There is an increase in the incidence of cancer, and consequently in mortality rates, both in the world and in Turkey. The increase in the incidence and mortality rate of cancer are more prominent in our country as well as in other developing countries. The aim of this workshop was to determine the current status on prevention, screening, early diagnosis and treatment of cancer in our country, to identify related shortcomings, specify solutions and to share these with health system operators, and to aid in implementation of these systems.

Safety and feasibility of lumbar spine for intralaminar screw fixation: a computed tomography-based morphometric study.

Phalangeal fractures of the foot are very rare in children. They are treated with closed reduction and splinting. Cases reported of non-union in children are rare.

Treatment of juvenile hallux valgus interphalangeus with a double compression headless bone screw.

A 14-year-old girl presented with idiopathic valgus deformity of her left great toe at the interphalangeal joint (IPJ). The deformity, which had been present but asymptomatic for the past 4 years, began to enlarge and cause discomfort. The measured IPJ angle on anteroposterior standing X-ray was 26°.

Atypical Localization of Enchondroma in the Calcaneus.

A 53-year-old man presented to the orthopedic outpatient clinic with pain and swelling in the right heel without any trauma. On physical examination and radiologic assessment, a lesion with calcification and peripheral sclerosis was detected in the medullary cavity of the calcaneus, and computed tomographic images revealed cortical thinning adjacent to the lesion. Magnetic resonance images showed a 23 × 19-mm lesion.

The Effect of Coumaric Acid on Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury of Sciatic Nerve in Rats.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of coumaric acid on sciatic nerve ischemia/reperfusion (SNI) injury in rats. The rats were randomly divided into four groups: control group (no medication or surgical procedure), SNI group, SNI + coumaric acid (CA) group, and SNI + methylprednisolone (MP) group. Ischemia was achieved by abdominal aorta clamping, and all animals were sacrificed 24 h after ischemia.
