The diversity of plant-pollinator interactions is grounded in floral resources, with nectar considered one of the main floral rewards plants produce for pollinators. However, a global evaluation of the number of animal-pollinated nectar-producing angiosperms and their distribution world-wide remains elusive. We compiled a thorough database encompassing 7621 plant species from 322 families to estimate the number and proportion of nectar-producing angiosperms reliant on animal pollination.

Incidences of COVID-19 in major mining municipalities in the Brazilian Amazon: Economic impacts, risks and lessons.

This paper provides an assessment of COVID-19 occurrences in the Brazilian Amazon, with special emphasis on municipalities where mining activity is prevalent. It does so with a view to exploring how mining may be influencing the spread of coronavirus, not only within municipalities where the sector is widespread but also other areas of the Amazon. The analysis draws on findings from qualitative research and case studies of selected mining municipalities in Brazil.

Chronic ethanol consumption compromises neutrophil function in acute pulmonary infection.

Chronic ethanol consumption is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, with higher risks to develop pulmonary infections, including infections. Mechanisms underlying increased susceptibility to infections are poorly understood. Chronic ethanol consumption induced increased mortality rates, higher burden and reduced neutrophil recruitment into the airways.

Demographic and clinical characteristics of pulmonary arterial hypertension caused by schistosomiasis are indistinguishable from other etiologies.

Introduction: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a serious pulmonary circulation disease caused by several etiologies, including schistosomiasis. The present study retrospectively evaluated the clinical and hemodynamic characteristics of patients with schistosomal PAH (PAH-Sch) compared to those of non-Sch PAH patients (non-Sch PAH).

Methods: Patients treated at the Pronto-Socorro Cardiológico de Pernambuco and diagnosed by right cardiac catheterization were divided into PAH-Sch and non-Sch PAH groups.

An association between increased susceptibility to infectious diseases and obesity has been described as a result of impaired immunity in obese individuals. It is not clear whether a similar linkage can be drawn between obesity and parasitic diseases. To evaluate the effect of obesity in the immune response to cutaneous Leishmania major infection, we studied the ability of C57BL/6 mice fed a hypercaloric diet (HSB) to control leishmaniasis.

Schistosomiasis-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension: survival in endemic area in Brazil.

Background: The survival of schistosomiasis-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (Sch-PAH) patients in endemic areas is unknown, but can be estimated using predictive equations.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed all consecutive patients diagnosed with Sch-PAH referred to the Pronto SocorroCardiologico de Pernambuco between 2004 and 2010 using specific therapy and measured laboratory, diagnostic imaging, and baseline hemodynamic parameters. Observed and predicted survivals according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Pulmonary Hypertension Connection (PHC) registry equations were compared by the Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards model.

Ascorbic acid plays important cellular and biochemical roles as an antioxidant and contributes to the proper collagen biosynthesis necessary for the structure of connective and bone tissues. However, whether ascorbic acid can directly influence the mechanisms of fish myogenesis and skeletal muscle growth remains unclear.

Which Cholecystectomy do Medical Students Prefer?

Introduction: This study was undertaken to identify which minimally invasive technique medical students prefer for cholecystectomy and what factors determine their decision.

Methods: Brazilian medical students watched a video reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of six different surgical approaches to cholecystectomy: open surgery, conventional laparoscopy, mini-laparoscopy (MINI), single-incision laparoscopic surgery, natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, and robotic surgery. Respondents then answered questions about hypothetical situations in which the participants would be submitted to elective cholecystectomy.

A new hybrid mini-laparoscopic technique for Spigelian hernia.

We describe the original technique used for the treatment of a patient who presented with pain and bulging in the abdomen, who was diagnosed with Spigelian hernia (SH) using ultrasound. In this case, the hernia occurred in the anterolateral abdominal wall with herniation of the distal ileum and mesentery, in addition to a large right inguinal hernia. A mini-laparoscopic approach was proposed; due to Child-A hepatic cirrhosis, it was done by a hybrid technique, using a harmonic scalpel.

Blood loss during and following transurethral resection.

Blood loss measurement in transurethral prostatic surgery (TUR) has been studied with the following objectives: (1) to measure the total lost volume (during surgery and 48 hours postoperatively); (2) to compare surgical bleeding and coagulogram alterations in benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and prostatic carcinoma (CaP); (3) to establish the relationship between blood loss, duration of the procedure, and amount of resected tissue. The method of Jansen was used to measure blood loss, and the "coagulogram" included the following parameters: hematrocrit; prothrombin, recalcification, thrombin, and partial thromboplastin times; fibrinogen; platelets and fibrin split products. The study is based on TUR performed on 75 patients from whom a mean weight of 25.

Sacral agenesis: why is it so frequently misdiagnosed?
