Incidental discovery of an undisplaced ceramic liner fracture at total hip arthroplasty revision for squeaking.

Squeaking has been reported after ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA), but its pathomechanics is not fully understood. Impaired lubrication is suspected to be the main reason. The management of patients impacted by this phenomenon is not well defined and, as it is not considered to be cause for alarm, revision is not strongly recommended.

Primary total hip arthroplasty revision due to dislocation: prospective French multicenter study.

Introduction: Dislocation following total hip arthroplasty (THA) may require surgical revision, and is one of the most frequent causes for revision in national registers. The goals of this study were to determine the characteristics of revision THA for dislocation and identify the typical features of hips revised due to dislocation.

Materials And Methods: A prospective multicenter study (30 centers) was performed in first revision THA performed between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011 (multiple revisions were excluded).

FT-IR/ATR univariate and multivariate calibration models for in situ monitoring of sugars in complex microalgal culture media.

The objective of this work is to develop a quick and simple method for the in situ monitoring of sugars in biological cultures. A new technology based on Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR/ATR) spectroscopy in combination with an external light guiding fiber probe was tested, first to build predictive models from solutions of pure sugars, and secondly to use those models to monitor the sugars in the complex culture medium of mixotrophic microalgae. Neuropsychological outcomes of a randomized trial of prednisone versus dexamethasone in acute lymphoblastic leukemia: findings from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute All Consortium Protocol 00-01.

Background: Dexamethasone is more efficacious than prednisone in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), but has also been associated with greater toxicity. We compared neuropsychological outcomes for patients treated on DFCI ALL Consortium Protocol 00-01, which included a randomized comparison of the two steroid preparations during post-induction therapy in children and adolescents with ALL.

Procedure: Between 2000 and 2005, 408 children with standard-risk or high-risk ALL treated on Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Consortium Protocol 00-01 were randomly assigned to prednisone or dexamethasone administered as 5-day pulses every 3 weeks for 2 years, beginning at week 7 of treatment.

High endothelial venule blood vessels for tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes are associated with lymphotoxin β-producing dendritic cells in human breast cancer.

Blood vessels and tumor angiogenesis are generally associated with tumor growth and poor clinical outcome of cancer patients. However, we recently discovered that some blood vessels present within the tumor microenvironment can be associated with favorable prognosis. These vessels, designated tumor high endothelial venules (HEVs), appear to facilitate tumor destruction by allowing high levels of lymphocyte infiltration into tumors.

First Report of Sugarcane Leaf Scald in Gabon Caused by a Highly Virulent and Aggressive Strain of Xanthomonas albilineans.

During a disease inspection at the sugarcane estate SUCAF near Franceville, Gabon, in March 2011, 0.5 to 1 cm wide chlorotic stripes covered with many small red streaks were observed on sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) leaves of a single plant of cultivar R581.

Hyperphosphorylation of glucosyl C6 carbons and altered structure of glycogen in the neurodegenerative epilepsy Lafora disease.

Laforin or malin deficiency causes Lafora disease, characterized by altered glycogen metabolism and teenage-onset neurodegeneration with intractable and invariably fatal epilepsy. Plant starches possess small amounts of metabolically essential monophosphate esters. Glycogen contains similar phosphate amounts, which are thought to originate from a glycogen synthase error side reaction and therefore lack any specific function.

Progressive myoclonus epilepsy.

The progressive myoclonus epilepsies (PMEs) consist of a group of diseases with myoclonic seizures and progressive neurodegeneration, with onset in childhood and/or adolescence. Lafora disease is a neuronal glycogenosis in which normal glycogen is transformed into starch-like polyglucosans that accumulate in the neuronal somatodendritic compartment. It is caused by defects of two genes of yet unknown function, one encoding a glycogen phosphatase (laforin) and the other an ubiquitin E3 ligase (malin).

Novel insights into ChREBP regulation and function.

Glucose is an energy source that also controls the expression of key genes involved in energetic metabolism through the glucose-signaling transcription factor carbohydrate response element-binding protein (ChREBP). ChREBP has recently emerged as a central regulator of glycolysis and de novo fatty acid synthesis in liver, but new evidence shows that it plays a broader and crucial role in various processes, ranging from glucolipotoxicity to apoptosis and/or proliferation in specific cell types. However, several aspects of ChREBP activation by glucose metabolites are currently controversial, as well as the effects of activating or inhibiting ChREBP, on insulin sensitivity, which might depend on genetic, dietary or environmental factors.

Durom hip resurfacing system: retrospective study of 644 cases with an average follow-up of 34 months.

Introduction: The performance of second-generation metal-on-metal bearings has led to the reintroduction of hip resurfacing. The goal of this multicentre study was to evaluate the short-term radiological and clinical outcomes with the Durom hip resurfacing system.

Hypothesis: The Durom hip-resurfacing system will have similar results to other hip resurfacing systems and traditional hip arthroplasty implants.

What are the causes for failures of primary hip arthroplasties in France?

Background: There are no large database cohorts describing the causes for failure of primary THAs in France. Because implants and causes for revision vary between national registers, it is important to obtain data from all countries.

Questions/purposes: We therefore determined (1) the mechanisms of failure of primary THAs, (2) their order of appearance with time, (3) the types of surgical techniques and implant designs used to perform revision THAs, and (4) 90-day complications after revision THA in France.

Low rate of dislocation of dual-mobility cups in primary total hip arthroplasty.

Background: Dual-mobility (DM) cups were introduced to minimize the risk of THA dislocation. The overall rate of dislocation of DM cups (including both large and small articulations) is controversial and ranges from 0% to 5% in previous studies.

Questions/purposes: We therefore recorded (1) the dislocation rate, (2) loosening and osteolysis, and (3) subsequent related revisions with DM cups.

Objectives: To evaluate IQ and academic skills in adults who experienced an episode of moderate-to-severe infantile malnutrition and a healthy control group, all followed since childhood in the Barbados Nutrition Study.

Can patients return to high-impact physical activities after hip resurfacing? A prospective study.

Purpose: Although the resumption of low-impact sports activities is compatible with total hip arthroplasty (THA), participation in high-impact sports seems problematic, and there is no consensus as to whether it is advisable. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the quality and possibility of resuming high-impact physical activities after hip resurfacing.

Materials: The study was performed in an on-going, single-surgeon, prospective series of 215 resurfacing arthroplasties (RSA).

A new prognostic clinicopathological classification of pituitary adenomas: a multicentric case-control study of 410 patients with 8 years post-operative follow-up.

Pituitary adenomas are currently classified by histological, immunocytochemical and numerous ultrastructural characteristics lacking unequivocal prognostic correlations. We investigated the prognostic value of a new clinicopathological classification with grades based on invasion and proliferation. This retrospective multicentric case-control study comprised 410 patients who had surgery for a pituitary tumour with long-term follow-up.

Flows of gas through a protoplanetary gap.

The formation of gaseous giant planets is thought to occur in the first few million years after stellar birth. Models predict that the process produces a deep gap in the dust component (shallower in the gas). Infrared observations of the disk around the young star HD 142527 (at a distance of about 140 parsecs from Earth) found an inner disk about 10 astronomical units (AU) in radius (1 AU is the Earth-Sun distance), surrounded by a particularly large gap and a disrupted outer disk beyond 140 AU.

Social Risk and Depression: Evidence from Manual and Automatic Facial Expression Analysis.

Investigated the relationship between change over time in severity of depression symptoms and facial expression. Depressed participants were followed over the course of treatment and video recorded during a series of clinical interviews. Facial expressions were analyzed from the video using both manual and automatic systems.

Hip prosthesis infection related to an unchecked intrauterine contraceptive device: a case report.

Intrauterine devices (IUD) used for contraception can be the source of local infections or can migrate, which justifies regular checking recommendations and limitations around the implantation period. To our knowledge, bone and joint infections related to an infected IUD have not been described in the scientific literature. This paper reports on a case of the repeated infection of a total hip prosthesis related to an infected IUD that had been forgotten after being implanted 34years previously.

Far-field optical control of a movable subdiffraction light grid.

We demonstrate experimentally a subdiffraction light pattern, with a period down to 150 nm, at the surface of an optimized silicon nanostructured thin film. We show, using near-field and far-field characterization, that this subdiffraction pattern can be translated and rotated just by changing the illumination angle. The movable high frequency light pattern paves the way for subdiffraction resolution surface imaging microscopy without scanning near-field probes.

Neutralisation of the interleukin-33/ST2 pathway ameliorates experimental colitis through enhancement of mucosal healing in mice.

Objective: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have been intrinsically linked to a deregulated cytokine network, but novel therapeutic principles are urgently needed. Here we identify the interleukin (IL)-33 and its receptor ST2 as key negative regulators of wound healing and permeability in the colon of mice.

Design: Expression of IL-33 and ST2 was determined by qRT-PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry and western-blot analysis.

High endothelial venules (HEVs) in human melanoma lesions: Major gateways for tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes.

The presence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) is a strong prognostic parameter for local dissemination and overall survival in melanoma. Lymphocyte migration from blood into peripheral tissues is mainly regulated by vascular endothelium. However, the blood vessels and mechanisms governing the recruitment of TILs in melanoma tumors remain poorly understood.

In search of foreign antigens, lymphocytes recirculate from the blood, through lymph nodes, into lymphatics and back to the blood. Dendritic cells also migrate to lymph nodes for optimal interaction with lymphocytes. This continuous trafficking of immune cells into and out of lymph nodes is essential for immune surveillance of foreign invaders.

TRAIL but not FasL and TNFα, regulates IL-33 expression in murine hepatocytes during acute hepatitis.

Unlabelled: Interleukin (IL)-33, a member of the IL-1 cytokine family, positively correlates with acute hepatitis and chronic liver failure in mice and humans. IL-33 is expressed in hepatocytes and is regulated by natural killer T (NKT) cells during concanavalin A (ConA)-induced acute liver injury.
