This opening article to the special issue provides a brief overview of this research domain, with particular attention to theoretical practices within it. Communication accommodation theory (CAT) is introduced given it has provided a foundation for other well-cited models of communication and aging.

Sex affects transcriptional associations with schizophrenia across the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and caudate nucleus.

Schizophrenia is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder with sexually dimorphic features, including differential symptomatology, drug responsiveness, and male incidence rate. Prior large-scale transcriptome analyses for sex differences in schizophrenia have focused on the prefrontal cortex. Analyzing BrainSeq Consortium data (caudate nucleus: n = 399, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex: n = 377, and hippocampus: n = 394), we identified 831 unique genes that exhibit sex differences across brain regions, enriched for immune-related pathways.

Testing for t(3;8) in MYC/BCL6-rearranged large B-cell lymphoma identifies a high-risk subgroup with inferior survival.

A reciprocal t(3;8) BCL6::MYC fusion is common in large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) with MYC and BCL6 disruption. These pseudo-double-hit cases are not adverse, whereas t(3;8)-MYC/BCL6 lymphoma has an inferior prognosis relative to other MYC-rearranged LBCL.

Performance Characteristics and Limitations of the Available Assays for the Detection and Quantitation of Monoclonal Free Light Chains and New Emerging Methodologies.

Light chain measurements form an essential component of the testing strategy for the detection and monitoring of patients with suspected and/or proven plasma cell disorders. Urine-based electrophoretic assays remain at the centre of the international guidelines for response assessment but the supplementary role of serum-free light chain (FLC) assays in response assessment and the detection of disease progression due to their increased sensitivity has been increasingly recognised since their introduction in 2001. Serum FLC assays have also been shown to be prognostic across the spectrum of plasma cell disorders and are now incorporated into risk stratification scores for patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), smouldering multiple myeloma, and light chain amyloidosis (AL amyloidosis), as well as being incorporated into the criteria for defining symptomatic multiple myeloma.

Key Points: This is the largest analysis of incident automated peritoneal dialysis (PD) prescriptions conducted in the United States to date. There was limited variability of automated PD prescriptions across the first 4 months of therapy. PD prescriptions tailored to meet the dialysis needs and lifestyle of patients may make PD a more attractive choice and increase longevity on PD.

A narrative review investigating the potential effect of lubrication as a mitigation strategy for whey protein-associated mouthdrying.

Whey is consumed by active adults to aid muscle recovery and growth, the general population as a nutritious convenient food, and by older adults to prevent sarcopenia due to its high leucine content. However, whey protein has poor consumer acceptance in this latter demographic, partially due to mouthdrying. This is thought to result from electrostatic interactions between whey and salivary proteins, mucoadhesion to the oral mucosa, and the inherent astringency of acidity.

Dual pathology: paraneoplastic sarcoidosis emerging at the time of progression from smouldering to symptomatic myeloma.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic disease of unknown aetiology, which is diagnosed based on the presence of non-caseating granulomas on histology. The occurrence of sarcoidosis or a sarcoidosis-like reaction with malignancy has been recognised for several years. Although it has been established that there is an increased risk of lymphoproliferative disorder with sarcoidosis, the association between multiple myeloma and sarcoidosis has rarely been reported.

Healthcare Professionals' Emotional Labor and Management of Workplace Violence with Underserved Patients in the Safety Net Context.

Healthcare providers (HP) work in high-stress situations, interacting with patients and families who are often in crisis. HPs who work in safety net clinics, which provide care to uninsured, Medicaid recipients and other vulnerable populations, interact with patients who are frequently frustrated by long wait times, extensive paperwork, short appointments, and have generally lower health literacy. Many patients have chronic conditions and substance use disorders which has been associated with higher likelihood to be perceived as verbally aggressive and/or perpetrate workplace violence (WPV).

Uptake of long-chain fatty acids from the bone marrow suppresses CD8+ T-cell metabolism and function in multiple myeloma.

T cells demonstrate impaired function in multiple myeloma (MM) but suppressive mechanisms in the bone marrow microenvironment remain poorly defined. We observe that bone marrow CD8+ T-cell function is decreased in MM compared with controls, and is also consistently lower within bone marrow samples than in matched peripheral blood samples. These changes are accompanied by decreased mitochondrial mass and markedly elevated long-chain fatty acid uptake.

Risk Factors and Cardiovascular Events in Orthotopic Liver Transplantation.

Background And Aims: Patients undergoing liver transplantation often have significant cardiovascular risk factors and may experience cardiac-related morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of cardiovascular risk factors and outcomes in this population, and to identify factors predictive of post-transplant cardiac morbidity and mortality.

Methods: We studied 261 patients who underwent liver transplantation at a single Veterans' Affairs Medical center between 1997 and 2015 to evaluate new cardiovascular events post-transplantation.

After reviewing CAT, we outline commonalities between CAT and the Emotional Mimicry as Social Regulator view. We then discuss how CAT and the Emotional Mimicry as Social Regulator view can contribute to each other.

Drug-microenvironment perturbations reveal resistance mechanisms and prognostic subgroups in CLL.

The tumour microenvironment and genetic alterations collectively influence drug efficacy in cancer, but current evidence is limited and systematic analyses are lacking. Using chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) as a model disease, we investigated the influence of 17 microenvironmental stimuli on 12 drugs in 192 genetically characterised patient samples. Based on microenvironmental response, we identified four subgroups with distinct clinical outcomes beyond known prognostic markers.

The Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN) Myeloma Intergroup conducted a workshop on Immune and Cellular Therapy in Multiple Myeloma on January 7, 2022. This workshop included presentations by basic, translational, and clinical researchers with expertise in plasma cell dyscrasias. Four main topics were discussed: platforms for myeloma disease evaluation, insights into pathophysiology, therapeutic target and resistance mechanisms, and cellular therapy for multiple myeloma.

The potential role of mass spectrometry for the identification and monitoring of patients with plasma cell disorders: Where are we now and which questions remain unanswered?

Mass spectrometry (MS) techniques provide a highly sensitive methodology for the assessment and monitoring of paraproteins compared to standard electrophoretic techniques. The International Myeloma Working Group (IMWG) recently approved the use of intact light chain matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in lieu of immunofixation in the clinical assessment of patients and the assessment of patients enrolled on clinical trials. The increased sensitivity of these assays may help to detect and monitor monoclonal proteins (MP) in many patients with previously non-measurable disease, will reduce complete response (CR) rates and increase detection of low-level MP.

The weight status of children in late childhood within south East Wales and predictions for their future health.

Background: Current child measurements of weight status in Wales are determined at early childhood only. A further measurement at late childhood could identify adiposity levels prior to adolescence and young adulthood. The aim of this study therefore was to determine current adiposity levels in a cohort of children at late childhood and present a prediction of future levels upon entering young adulthood.

Multi-omics reveals clinically relevant proliferative drive associated with mTOR-MYC-OXPHOS activity in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) has a complex pattern of driver mutations and much of its clinical diversity remains unexplained. We devised a method for simultaneous subgroup discovery across multiple data types and applied it to genomic, transcriptomic, DNA methylation and ex-vivo drug response data from 217 Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) cases. We uncovered a biological axis of heterogeneity strongly associated with clinical behavior and orthogonal to the known biomarkers.
