Differential effects of cohort removal stress on the acoustic startle response of the Roman/Verh rat strains.

Male and female rats of the inbred Roman/Verh strains, which have been psychogenetically selected and bred for good (RHA-I/Verh) and extremely poor (RLA-I/Verh) two-way avoidance acquisition, were evaluated in an acoustic startle response test. One half of the rats of each strain and sex were previously subjected to 30 min of isolation by removal of their cage partners ("cohort removal"). During the testing session each animal received 40 acoustic stimuli at interstimulus intervals of 30 seconds.

A case of massive trichuriasis in a 37-year-old female from a rural locality of the Metropolitan Region of Chile, with antecedents of alcoholism, chronic hepatic damage and portal cavernomatosis, is presented. Industrial development has resulted in an increased release of chemicals and other agents into the environment, resulting in damage to the environment as well as increasing the risk of adverse effects on human health. Environmental toxicology (ET) is the discipline responsible for assessing the risks to human health and the environment from the effects of new chemicals and those already present in the environment. The development of human resources in toxicology is therefore a priority in both Latin America (LA) and the European Union (EU), although LA professionals are more involved in risk evaluation than in risk assessment compared to their EU colleagues.

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy study of the microstructural changes occurring in aluminium matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles during casting and welding: interface reactions.

Processing of aluminium matrix composites (AMCs), especially those constituted by a reactive system such as Al-SiC, presents great difficulties which limit their potential applications. The interface reactivity between SiC and molten Al generates an aluminium carbide which degrades the composite properties. Scanning and transmission electron microscopes equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopes are essential tools for determining the structure and chemistry of the Al-SiC interfaces in AMCs and changes occurring during casting and arc welding.

Inbred Roman high- and low-avoidance rats: differences in anxiety, novelty-seeking, and shuttlebox behaviors.

In the present study, male inbred animals (from the 10th generation of an inbreeding program that has been carried out in parallel to that of the outbred Roman high- and low-avoidance rat lines), were compared for emotionality in different testing situations, exploratory behavior in the holeboard and two-way, active-avoidance acquisition. Compared to the inbred Roman high-avoidance (RHA-I/Verh) rats, inbred Roman low-avoidance (RLA-I-Verh) rats showed higher emotionality in the open field (reduced distance travelled and number of rearings, and increased self-grooming behavior), in the elevated plus-maze test (increased number of total and open-arm entries, reduced distance travelled in the open arms, and increased self-grooming behavior), and during the habituation period in the shuttle box (decreased number of crossings, increased self-grooming behavior and defecations). Results from the hyponeophagia test were not conclusive, probably due to the test-dependent hyperactivity shown by RHA-I/Verh rats.

Ethnic susceptibility to lung cancer: differences in CYP2E1, CYP1A1 and GSTM1 genetic polymorphisms between French Caucasian and Chilean populations.

Many investigators have reported an association between genetic polymorphisms of cytochromes P-450 CYP2E1, CYP1A1 or glutathione S-transferase Mu (GSTM1) and susceptibility to lung cancer. However, pronounced interethnic variations have been described in the frequencies of these polymorphisms, especially between Asians and Caucasians. The present study was set up to establish CYP2E1 (c1, c2 and C, D), CYP1A1 (m1, m2 and Ile, Val) and GSTM1 (null) allelic frequencies in Chileans (n = 96) who are an admixture of Native Americans and Caucasians (Spaniards).

Prostaglandin E2-bisphosphonate conjugates: potential agents for treatment of osteoporosis.

Conjugates of bisphosphonates (potential bone resorption inhibitors) and prostaglandin E2 (a bone formation enhancer) were prepared and evaluated for their ability to bind to bone and to liberate, enzymatically, free PGE2. The conjugate 3, an amide at C-1 of PGE2 proved to be too stable in vivo while conjugate 6, a thioester, was too labile. Several PGE2, C-15 ester-linked conjugates (18, 23, 24 and 31) were prepared and conjugate 23 was found to bind effectively to bone in vitro and in vivo and to liberate PGE2 at an acceptable rate.

Effects of muscle electrical stimulation on peak VO2 in cardiac transplant patients.

Peak oxygen consumption (peak VO2) has become a critical component in the evaluation of heart transplant recipients (HTR). In these patients, peak VO2 remains low after cardiac transplantation mainly because of persisting peripheral limitations in the working muscles. Muscular electrical stimulation, on the other hand, has been shown to enhance the oxidative capacity of healthy muscle.

Continuous intravenous intradialysis versus intravenous postdialysis erythropoietin therapy in chronic haemodialysis patients: a randomized, controlled, crossover study.

Background: Subcutaneous recombinant human erythropoietin seems to be more effective than intravenous administration. Local pain, however, may diminish patient compliance with the subcutaneous route. Recently continuous intravenous intradialysis administration of rHuEpo has been reported to be more efficacious in stimulating erythropoiesis than the usual postdialysis intravenous bolus.

Hepatic enzyme induction and mutagenicity of airborne particulate matter from Santiago, Chile in the nourished and malnourished rat.

Effect of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors on red blood cell membrane lipids and haemorheological parameters, in patients affected by familial hypercholesterolemia.

Eighteen patients with familial hypercholesterolemia treated with lovastatin (40 mg/day) for three months were studied to find out whether the drug induces modifications in the lipid composition of the erythrocyte membrane and whether these induce changes in the rheological behaviour of the red blood cell. Our results show that the changes observed in plasma lipids correlate with a significant decrease in the cholesterol/phospholipid ratio of the red blood cell membrane. These changes in the lipid composition of the cell are statistically related to a decrease in the erythrocyte aggregability and an improvement in blood filterability probably due to an increase in the red blood cell deformability.

Erythrocyte membrane cholesterol/phospholipid changes and hemorheological modifications in familial hypercholesterolemia treated with lovastatin.

Fourteen patients with familial hypercholesterolemia treated with lovastatin (40 mg/day) for three months were studied to find out whether the expected changes in plasma lipids are accompanied by modifications in the lipid composition of the erythrocyte membrane and whether these in turn induce changes in the rheological behavior of the red blood cell. Background: Hepatitis E virus is an enterally transmitted virus that produces an acute self limited infection.

Aim: To study serum antibodies against hepatitis E virus in different patients.

Patients And Methods: Using and ELISA technique, IgG antibodies against hepatitis E virus were measured in 40 alcoholics, 40 hemophiliacs, 174 blood donors, 36 subjects with acute non A-non B-non C hepatitis and 66 subjects with acute hepatitis A.

[Impact of outdoor pollution on indoor air quality. The case of downtown Santiago (Chile)].

The influence of outdoor pollution on indoor air quality was studied in downtown Santiago(Bandera street). Carbon monoxide (CO), nicotine, particulate matter, respirable fraction (PM5) and total and carcinogenic polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were simultaneously monitored indoors and outdoors in restaurants, offices and other places. The levels of CO changed simultaneously outdoors and indoors (r = 0.
