We estimated the direct, indirect and total effects of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) on invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children. A population-based cohort study followed children aged between 2.5 and 59 months between 2001 and 2014 in Navarra, Spain.

Pesticide exposure has been associated with different adverse health effects which may be modulated to some extent by paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity and genetic polymorphisms. This study assessed seasonal variations in PON1 activity (using paraoxon -POase-, phenylacetate -AREase-, diazoxon -DZOase- and dihydrocoumarin -DHCase- as substrates), erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and plasma cholinesterase (using butyrylthiocholine -BuChE- and benzoylcholine -BeChE- as substrates. The study population consisted of intensive agriculture workers regularly exposed to pesticides other than organophosphates and non-exposed controls from Almería (Southeastern Spain).

Customized Interface Biofunctionalization of Decellularized Extracellular Matrix: Toward Enhanced Endothelialization.

Interface biofunctionalization strategies try to enhance and control the interaction between implants and host organism. Decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) is widely used as a platform for bioengineering of medical implants, having shown its suitability in a variety of preclinical as well as clinical models. In this study, specifically designed, custom-made synthetic peptides were used to functionalize dECM with different cell adhesive sequences (RGD, REDV, and YIGSR).

Early magnetic resonance imaging control after temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) lysis and lavage arthrocentesis with viscosupplementation are an effective treatment for acute disc displacement (DD) without reduction. Clinical success seems to be related to multiple factors despite the lack of understanding of its mechanisms. The authors present a case report of 17-year-old women with acute open mouth limitation (12 mm), right TMJ pain-8/10 visual analog scale, right deviation when opening her mouth.

Roughness and wettability effect on histological and mechanical response of self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants.

Objectives: Self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants can be used as temporary devices for orthodontic treatments. Our main goal was to evaluate surface characteristics, roughness and wettability, of surface modified mini-implants to increase their stability during orthodontic treatment without inducing bone fracture and tissue destruction during unscrewing.

Materials And Methods: Modified mini-implants by acid etching, grit-blasting and its combination were implanted in 20 New Zealand rabbits during 10 weeks.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the discriminative ability of the Infant Neurological International Battery (INFANIB), applied at 3, 6 and 9 months of corrected age (CA), on neurological outcomes at 1 year of CA.

Method: An observational analytic study was conducted on a cohort of 5857 infants, followed up to 1 year of CA in a Kangaroo Mother Care programme from 1993 to 2010 in Bogotá, Colombia. Infants were included if they had two complete INFANIB results at 3 or 6 or 9 months of CA and at 12 months of CA, including the Griffiths Scale.

Polymorphisms in the GHRL gene and their associations with traits of economic interest in beef cattle.

The hormone ghrelin is produced in the stomach wall, has an orexigenic function, stimulates growth hormone secretion, and affects the energy balance of the animal. Therefore, the ghrelin gene (GHRL) is considered to be a good candidate marker for the identification of traits of great economic importance in cattle, such as those associated with feed intake, growth, and carcass quality. The use of molecular genetic markers associated with such traits permits the earlier and more accurate identification of superior animals, thus reducing the interval between generations, and increasing the genetic gain.

Evaluation of an ultrasound-guided technique for axillary brachial plexus blockade in cats.

Motility modulation by the small non-coding RNA SroC in Salmonella Typhimurium.

Bacterial regulatory networks of gene expression include the interaction of diverse types of molecules such as the small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) and their cognate messenger RNAs (mRNAs). In this study, we demonstrated that the Salmonella Typhimurium sRNA SroC is significantly expressed between the late-exponential and stationary phase of growth in an rpoS-dependent manner. The expression of flagellar genes predicted as targets of this sRNA was quantitatively analyzed in both a ΔsroC mutant and a SroC-overexpressing (pSroC) strain.

Determination of fluid leakages in the different screw-retained implant-abutment connections in a mechanical artificial mouth.

This study shows the potential risk of microfiltration between two different types of implant-abutment connections screwed at 45 Ncm: external and internal. For the first time the use of a mechanical artificial mouth is used with the values (compression and torsion loads with a frequency of 2 Hz) of the human chewing. Validation of the dorsal approach for the blockade of the femoral nerve using ultrasound and nerve electrolocation in cats.
