Due to the current lack of standard definitions for rapidly progressive osteoarthritis of the hip (RPOH) in the literature, this observational study aimed to describe new diagnostic criteria and a grading system for the disease. From a consecutive series of patients undergoing total hip replacement, 2 groups were selected: 1 with RPOH and 1 with primary hip osteoarthritis (POH), and their clinical, paraclinical, and demographic data were compared. The newly proposed clinico-radiological diagnostic criteria are based on characteristics of pain, joint mobility, and radiological assessment.

Purpose: This retrospective study investigated midterm outcomes of uncemented total hip replacement with acetabuloplasty using impacted bone grafts in acetabular protrusion or primary hip arthritis with an inadequate thickness of the medial acetabular wall.

Methods: The medial acetabular wall was augmented by impaction bone grafting, and an uncemented cup was implanted in all cases. Hip centre of rotation, medial acetabular wall thickness and cup positioning were evaluated radiologically, with the Harris Hip Score determined at each follow-up.

Purpose: Anatomically correct graft positioning at the femoral insertion site is a key factor in surgical reconstruction of the medial patello-femoral ligament (MPFL). Basically there are two techniques to define this point in fluoroscopy during surgery. The role of the anatomical femoral torsion on the accuracy and reproducibility of both procedures has not been clarified.

Osteomyelitis is a disease that is still difficult to treat, with considerable morbidity and associated costs. The current "gold standard" in treatment - debridement and implantation of antibiotic impregnated polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads - presents the disadvantage of a second surgical intervention required for the removal of the beads. We comparatively investigated the in vitro antibacterial effect of S53P4 bioactive glass (BAG) and gentamicin impregnated PMMA beads.

The clinical and laboratory data from a cross-sectional and a longitudinal study of healthy individuals between 50-89 years of age and that of centenarians were compared. The examination showed that in healthy elderly subjects and centenarians most of the clinical laboratory findings were in the normal range. However, age-related changes could be observed in erythrocyte sedimentation rate, in serum albumin level, and in the frequency of rheuma factor.

Thyrotropin (TSH), thyroxine (T24) 3,5,3403 triiodothyronine (T23), serum lipid levels and ECG findings in females who underwent thyroidectomy 2-44 years earlier, were compared to those of similar controls with intact thyroid. Pathological ECG is more frequent in thyroidectomized persons who also exhibit higher thyrotropin and lower HDL-cholesterol levels. The results indicate that thyroidectomized state should be regarded and controlled as a possible condition of subclinical hypothyreosis, being a risk factor of cardiovascular diseases.

To investigate the influence of smoking on the aging immune system, the following parameters were determined in elderly smokers and non-smokers: presence of emphysema; absolute number of leucocytes, lymphocytes, T cells and B cells bearing membrane-bound IgG; serum IgG, IgA, IgM levels, occurrence of rheumatoid and antinuclear factors, and natural antibody level (against different bacteria). Ultrastructural disorders in lymphocytes were also investigated. The number of leucocytes, the levels of serum IgA, and the prevalence of autoantibodies were higher, and the natural antibody level was lower in smokers than in non-smokers.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined bone mineral content (BMC) in the lumbar spine and femoral neck of healthy Hungarian women, finding lower BMC values compared to North American and French women, but similar to those of Swedish women.
  • The research highlighted that bone loss in these women tends to accelerate around the age of 40, and the patterns of bone loss were effectively modeled using cubic equations.
  • A significant portion of Hungarian women, around 60% at age 50-59 and 84% at age 60-69, are at increased risk for non-traumatic vertebral fractures, indicating that geographical and lifestyle factors may play a crucial role in BMC variations across different populations.

After a survey of the pertinent literature, a brief account of the signs and symptoms, diagnosis and therapy of vesico-uterine fistula is given and two cases are reported. In the first case hysterectomy had to be done because tissue destruction was too extensive for organ saving surgery. In the second case the extent of the lesion was compatible with preservation of the uterus.
