High-flow priapism after T-shunt and tunneling in a patient with ischemic priapism.

Priapism is defined as an erection lasting for more than 4 hours without sexual stimulation. It is grouped into 3 subtypes: ischemic (low-flow), nonischemic (high-flow), and stuttering priapism. Herein we describe a rare event of high-flow state as a result of conversion from a delayed ischemic priapism after a T-shunt with tunneling.

Assessing the quality of studies in meta-research: Review/guidelines on the most important quality assessment tools.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses pool data from individual studies to generate a higher level of evidence to be evaluated by guidelines. These reviews ultimately guide clinicians and stakeholders in health-related decisions. However, the informativeness and quality of evidence synthesis inherently depend on the quality of what has been pooled into meta-research projects.

COVID-19 in Patients with Hematologic Disorders Undergoing Therapy: Perspective of a Large Referral Hematology Center in Rome.

Introduction: Patients with cancer may be more susceptible to and have higher morbidity and mortality rates from COVID-19 than the general population, while epidemiologic data specifically addressed to hematologic patients are limited. To investigate whether patients with hematologic diseases undergoing therapy are at increased risk for acquiring SARS CoV-2 infection compared to the general population, a retrospective study was carried out at a referral hematologic center in Rome, Italy, during the period of the greatest epidemic spread (March 8 to May 14, 2020).

Methods: All adult and pediatric patients with a diagnosis of a neoplastic or a nonneoplastic hematologic disease who underwent treatment (chemotherapy or immunosuppressive or supportive therapy) during the study period or in the previous 6 months were considered.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic and/or recurrent condition with somatic, cognitive, and affective symptoms following a contact with chemical agents whose concentrations do not correlate with toxicity in the general population. Its prevalence is not well defined; it mainly affects women between 40 and 50 years, without variations in ethnicity, education and economic status. We aimed to assess the core symptoms of this illness in a sample of Italian patients.

Background: To investigate the feasibility, image quality, and clinical implications of a combined ECG-gated and helical acquisition mode in a computed tomography angiography (CTA) protocol in patients scheduled for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) using a fixed, low-volume, contrast medium injection.

Methods: Between July and October 2019, 43 TAVI candidates underwent investigation with CTA using a 64-slice CT scanner. Images obtained were prospectively evaluated.

A Rare Case of Coexisting Breast Cancer and Refractory Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

The occurrence of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) within six months from a diagnosis of breast cancer (BC) is rarely reported in the literature, and it is associated with a poor prognosis. We report herein the case of a 40-year-old woman referred to our centre affected by BC and simultaneous AML. The patient proved refractory to first line therapy and achieved complete remission (CR) with a clofarabine-based regimen followed by allogeneic stem cell transplantation (ASCT).

Environmental life cycle assessment of the recycling processes of waste plastics recovered by landfill mining.

Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) is a powerful tool for the sustainable management of landfill sites, aiming at both land reclamation and material recovery/reuse. To enhance the recovery and recycling rate of excavated plastic fractions, in most cases destined to energy recovery, new convenient, effective and sustainable strategies are needed. In this study, a recovery and valorization process of ELFM excavated plastics has been validated through an integrated experimental and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, demonstrating the environmental sustainability of the secondary raw material generated, in terms of use of resources and emissions generated.

Is it possible to detect lead derived from gunshot residues on decalcified human bone by means of a histochemical staining with sodium rhodizonate?

In this study we have evaluated the detectability of lead deriving from Gunshot Residues (GSR) on human bone using colorimetric techniques as well as the possible interferences of decalcification on the stainability of these particles. 22 well preserved cadavers were divided into two groups: group A enlisted 11 victims deceased because of gunshot injuries (bones and soft tissues sampled in correspondence of the entry wound of the bullet)- and group B, comprehending 11 victims deceased for natural causes (specimens sampled from intact skin areas). All the samples, after decalcification processes for bone specimens with a 14 % HCl solution, underwent standard histological procedures and were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), sodium rhodizonate (Na-R) and acidified sodium rhodizonate (Na-R-HCl 5 %).

To address this problem, iron oxide ultrafiltration membranes were coated with poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (polySBMA), a superhydrophilic zwitterionic polymer. A Brief Review of Scanning Electron Microscopy With Energy-Dispersive X-ray Use in Forensic Medicine.

Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive x-ray (SEM/EDX) analysis is an investigation whose potential has become increasingly important in the field of forensic research and diagnosis. We present the procedure to perform a well-carried-out SEM/EDX analysis on corpses affected by different types of injuries, such as blunt force trauma, ligature strangulation, electrocution, sharp force trauma, gunshot wounds, and intoxication. After the areas of forensic interest have been macroscopically identified, the sampling can be performed in 2 different ways: apposition of the double-sided graphite tape on the damaged area or performing the excision of a biological sample.

Air pollution has been warned of as a modifiable factor contributing to differential SARS-CoV-2 spread but the biological mechanisms underlying the phenomenon are still unknown. Air quality and COVID-19 epidemiological data from 110 Italian provinces were studied by correlation analysis, to evaluate the association between particulate matter (PM) concentrations and incidence, mortality rate and case fatality risk of COVID-19 in the period 20 February-31 March 2020.

Simulation of left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction in transcatheter mitral valve-in-ring replacement.

Left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction is a feared complication of transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR). This procedure leads to an elongation of LVOT in the left ventricle (namely, the neoLVOT), ultimately portending hemodynamic impairment and death. This study sought to understand the biomechanical implications of LVOT obstruction in two patients who underwent TMVR as an "off-label" application of the Edwards SAPIEN 3 (S3) Ultra transcatheter heart valve (THV).

Histomorphological aspects of cadaveric skin and its possible use in forensic genetics.

The skin is rarely considered as good biological material for successful DNA typing when a corpse is found in a leathery, mummified or partially skeletonised state, as bones and teeth are the gold standard in these cases. This study evaluates the histomorphological aspects of nuclear chromatin (Lillie's staining) in leathery and mummified skin samples as an indicator for possible successful DNA typing. Chromatin was found in samples that underwent mummification or partial skeletonisation but not in samples in a wet type of post-mortem transformation, such as saponification or leathery transformation.

Hyper-Crosslinked Polymer Nanocomposites Containing Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles with Enhanced Adsorption Towards Polar Dyes.

The development of new styrene-based hyper-crosslinked nanocomposites (HCLN) containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) is reported here as a new strategy to obtain functional high surface area materials with an enhanced hydrophilic character. The HCLN composition, morphology and porous structure were analyzed using a multi-technique approach. The HCLN displayed a high surface area (above 1600 m/g) and higher microporosity than the corresponding hyper-crosslinked neat resin.

Rates of hypogonadism forms in Klinefelter patients undergoing testicular sperm extraction: A multicenter cross-sectional study.
