Might photobiomodulation therapy interfere with the frequency of severe mucositis and oral candidiasis? A retrospective analysis in patients with head and neck carcinoma.

Purpose: Considering the tumor in the oral cavity or the oropharynx and nasopharynx region might be an aggravating factor for oral mucositis (OM) manifestation, the present study aimed to evaluate whether the location of the tumor and the use of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) might affect the frequency of oral candidiasis (OC) during radiotherapy (RT) and/or chemotherapy (CT) treatments.

Methods: The medial records of seventy-four patients with head and neck cancer treated in a public service from 2016 to 2019 were evaluated. All these patients were submitted to RT in an accumulated dose of 48 to 70 Gy of radiation.

We aimed to understand the perspective and use of HIV prevention methods in context of the sexual practices of adolescent gay and bisexual men, travestis, and transgender women (TGW). In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with 22 adolescent gay and bisexual men, travestis, and TGW aged between 15 and 19 years in São Paulo, Brazil, as part of the formative research of the PrEP1519 study, an ongoing daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) demonstration study among adolescents. Participants' knowledge repertoire about prevention methods and their experience with them concentrated on condoms, which were regarded as the most well-known, "compulsory" practice, whose use was an individual responsibility.

A trend toward animal welfare improvement is observed in animal production, in addition to restrictions imposed on the use of antimicrobials. This study's objective was to evaluate whether β-mannanase and probiotic supplementation can change hen's behavior. Light weight laying hens (36 weeks old) were housed in cages randomly allocated to one of four different treatments: control group, fed non-supplemented diets; diets supplemented with 300 g/ton of β-mannanase; diets supplemented with 50 g/ton of probiotic; or diets containing both 300 g/ton of β-mannanase and 50 g/ton of probiotic.

Thermoelectric transport properties of armchair graphene nanoribbon heterostructures.

In this paper, we numerically analyze the thermoelectric (TE) properties of recently synthesized graphene nanoribbon (GNR) heterostructures that are obtained as extensions of pristine armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs). After simulating their band structure through a nearest-neighbor tight-binding model, we use the Landauer formalism to calculate the necessary TE coefficients, with which we obtain the electrical conductance, thermopower, thermal conductance, linear-response thermocurrentIth/ΔT=GS, and figure of merit(using literature results for the phonon thermal conductance), at room temperature. We then compare the results for the nanoribbon heterostructures with those for the pristine AGNR nanoribbons.

Oral Lichen Planus: Associations Between Histomorphometric Characteristics and White and Red Lesions.

Histomorphometry seems to provide more rigid quantitative elements for histological analysis and to bring less subjectivity to the diagnosis of oral lichen planus lesions (OLP). This study aimed to verify the association between white and red lesions and histomorphometric characteristics of OLP lesions. This retrospective cross-sectional study assessed 48 hematoxylin- and eosin-stained histological sections from incisional biopsies obtained from OLP cases.

Band Polarization Effect on the Kondo State in a Zigzag Silicene Nanoribbon.

Using the Numerical Renormalization Group method, we study the properties of a quantum impurity coupled to a zigzag silicene nanoribbon (ZSNR) that is subjected to the action of a magnetic field applied in a generic direction. We propose a simulation of what a scanning tunneling microscope will see when investigating the Kondo peak of a magnetic impurity coupled to the metallic edge of this topologically non-trivial nanoribbon. This system is subjected to an external magnetic field that polarizes the host much more strongly than the impurity.

Subcellular Dynamics of a Conserved Bacterial Polar Scaffold Protein.

In order to survive, bacterial cells rely on precise spatiotemporal organization and coordination of essential processes such as cell growth, chromosome segregation, and cell division. Given the general lack of organelles, most bacteria are forced to depend on alternative localization mechanisms, such as, for example, geometrical cues. DivIVA proteins are widely distributed in mainly Gram-positive bacteria and were shown to bind the membrane, typically in regions of strong negative curvature, such as the cell poles and division septa.

It has a debilitating potential for the health of affected individuals, negatively interfering with nutritional status and quality of life. Adherence of head and neck cancer patients to laser photobiomodulation in a public health service: Pilot study.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the adherence of patients with head and neck cancer who underwent radiotherapy or radio-chemotherapy combined to the preventive laser photobiomodulation protocol in a public health service.

Materials And Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, whose population sample included patients with malignant head and neck neoplasms. Thirty head and neck cancer patients undergoing cancer treatment, were examined and interviewed through a record of signs and symptoms of oral mucositis (OM) and adherence to the preventive laser photobiomodulation protocol, that began in the first session of radiotherapy, and included the laser application three times a week during the 3-week period.

Electric-field-generated topological states in a silicene nanotube.

Applying an electric field perpendicular to the axis of a silicene armchair nanotube allows us to numerically study the formation of eight topological edge states as silicene's intrinsic spin-orbit gap is closed by the sublattice-staggered electrostatic potential created by the electric field. Following their evolution with electric field, it is revealed that, at very small fields, these eight states are very broad, spin-locked, and sublattice constrained, inheriting their properties from the K and K' states in a silicene two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Four of those states are centered at the very top of the nanotube and the other four states are centered at the very bottom.

Kondo effect under the influence of spin-orbit coupling in a quantum wire.

The analysis of the impact of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) on the Kondo state has generated considerable controversy, mainly regarding the dependence of the Kondo temperatureon SOC strength. Here, we study the one-dimensional (1D) single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) subjected to Rashba () and Dresselhaus () SOC. It is shown that, due to time-reversal symmetry, the hybridization function between impurity and quantum wire is diagonal and spin independent (as it is the case for the zero-SOC SIAM), thus the finite-SOC SIAM has a Kondo ground state similar to that for the zero-SOC SIAM.

Surgical periodontal treatment of a patient with dentinal hypersensitivity after bariatric surgery: a case report.

The aim of this report is to present the clinical case of a patient with severe symptoms of dentinal hypersensitivity after bariatric surgery. A 40-year-old woman had a complaint of hypersensitivity in all teeth after bariatric surgery to treat morbid obesity.
