While COVID-19 immunizations can improve outcomes from SARS-CoV-2, vaccine rates in the United States have been lowest among children under age 11 and among rural agricultural communities. This study examined factors influencing pediatric COVID-19 vaccine uptake among rural agricultural and predominantly Hispanic communities in Washington State. We conducted in-depth interviews with school district employees and students and held English and Spanish focus group discussions with parents, all of which were audio-recorded and transcribed.

The ancient arm of innate immunity known as the complement system is a blood proteolytic cascade involving dozens of membrane-bound and solution-phase components. Although many of these components serve as regulatory molecules to facilitate controlled activation of the cascade, C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) is the sole canonical complement regulator belonging to a superfamily of covalent inhibitors known as serine protease inhibitors (SERPINs). In addition to its namesake role in complement regulation, C1-INH also regulates proteases of the coagulation, fibrinolysis, and contact pathways.

Importance: With personalized touch-screen tablets, young children can choose content and engage in play-like activities. However, tablets may also reduce shared engagement as the action of viewing or touching the screen is often not visible to nearby adults. This may impact communicative gazing and pointing, which is critical to the formation of shared awareness and in turn supports language development.

The CRISPR-Cas13 system has been proposed as an alternative treatment of viral infections. However, for this approach to be adopted as an antiviral, it must be optimized until levels of efficacy rival or exceed the performance of conventional approaches. To take steps toward this goal, we evaluated the influenza viral RNA degradation patterns resulting from the binding and enzymatic activity of mRNA-encoded LbuCas13a and two crRNAs from a prior study, targeting PB2 genomic and messenger RNA.

When organisms move into new areas, they are likely to encounter novel food resources. Even if they are nutritious, these foods can also be risky, as they might be contaminated by parasites. The behavioural immune system of animals could help them avoid the negative effects of contaminated resources, but our understanding of behavioural immunity is limited, particularly whether and how behavioural immunity interacts with physiological immunity.

Somatic mosaicism is defined as an occurrence of two or more populations of cells having genomic sequences differing at given loci in an individual who is derived from a single zygote. It is a characteristic of multicellular organisms that plays a crucial role in normal development and disease. To study the nature and extent of somatic mosaicism in autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder, focal cortical dysplasia, schizophrenia, and Tourette syndrome, a multi-institutional consortium called the Brain Somatic Mosaicism Network (BSMN) was formed through the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the prevalence of cooccurring autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and gender dysphoria (GD) in US adolescents aged 9 to 18, showing a significantly higher prevalence of GD among those with an ASD diagnosis.
  • Data analysis indicated that youth identified as female and those with private insurance are more likely to receive both diagnoses, while youth of color, particularly Black and Asian, have a lower prevalence.
  • The findings highlight the importance of tailoring healthcare services to address disparities in access and improve outcomes for adolescents affected by both ASD and GD.

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is commonly used in propulsion technology. Recent studies have demonstrated that two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials such as graphene (Gr) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) dispersed with nitrocellulose (NC) can conformally coat the surface of AP particles and enhance the reactivity of AP. In this work, the effectiveness of ethyl cellulose (EC) as an alternative to NC was studied.

Sleep problems are common among adolescents and research on mind-body interventions for sleep is promising. Although technology-based mind-body interventions have been shown to help early adolescents with practicing mind-body approaches, engagement and adherence has been a challenge. Using a Human-Centered Design framework with semi-structured interviews with parent-adolescent dyads, we describe exposure to, interest in, and preferences for digital mind-body technology for sleep.

Background And Method: Pretrial detention makes up 75% of juvenile detention admissions and contributes to the disproportionate contact of minoritized youth in the juvenile carceral system. Given that prior evidence largely examines differences between Black and white youth, this study expands research on disproportionate contact in the pretrial detention setting to Hispanic/Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian youth. With a sample of over 44,000 juvenile cases in a northwest state, we used a generalized linear mixed model to estimate the effect of individual level characteristics while accounting for the random effect of differences at the county level.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted across 13 institutions with 692 patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) to evaluate the effects of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) on survival, quality of life (QOL), and overall function over 2 years.
  • Results showed that while HCT initially seemed to reduce mortality risk and improve quality of life, these benefits were less significant once factors like age and comorbidities were considered.
  • The findings suggest that the apparent survival advantages of HCT may stem from healthier patient selection rather than the treatment itself, highlighting the need for more controlled trials to better identify suitable candidates for HCT.
