A delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) polymorphism may modify the relationship of low-level lead exposure to uricemia and renal function: the normative aging study.

In this study we investigated whether a known delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) exon 4 polymorphism has a modifying effect on the association of blood or bone lead level with uricemia and indices of renal function among middle-aged and elderly men. We performed a cross-sectional study of subjects who participated between 1991 and 1995 in the Department of Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study. Information on blood lead levels, bone lead levels (measured by K-shell X-ray fluorescence), serum uric acid, serum creatinine, estimated creatinine clearance, and ALAD polymorphism status was available in 709 subjects.

Extractive fermentation for butyric acid production from glucose by Clostridium tyrobutyricum.

A novel extractive fermentation for butyric acid production from glucose, using immobilized cells of Clostridium tyrobutyricum in a fibrous bed bioreactor, was developed by using 10% (v/v) Alamine 336 in oleyl alcohol as the extractant contained in a hollow-fiber membrane extractor for selective removal of butyric acid from the fermentation broth. The extractant was simultaneously regenerated by stripping with NaOH in a second membrane extractor. The fermentation pH was self-regulated by a balance between acid production and removal by extraction, and was kept at approximately pH 5.

[Studies on characteristics of kinetics and metabolic shift of genetically engineered yeast Pichia pastoris in high-density chemostat cultivation].

Kinetics and metabolic shift of DNA recombinant yeast Pichia pastoris was studied in high-density chemostat cultivation in which the glycerol was used as a limited substrate. The experimental results showed that (1) cell optical density (OD600) of Pichia pastoris was linear with its dry cell weight (DCW) and wet cell weight (WCW), and reached 100 OD600 = 128.3 g WCW/L or 100 OD600 = 22.

Synthesis, structure, and photochemistry of exceptionally stable synthetic DNA hairpins with stilbene diether linkers.

The structure and properties of 18 hairpin-forming bis(oligonucleotide) conjugates possessing stilbene diether linkers are reported. Conjugates possessing bis(2-hydroxyethyl)stilbene 4,4'-diether linkers form the most stable DNA hairpins reported to date. Hairpins with as few as two T:A base pairs or four noncanonical G:G base pairs are stable at room temperature.

Genetic polymorphism of cytochrome P4501A1 and susceptibility to oral squamous cell carcinoma and oral precancer lesions associated with smoking/betel use.

Background: The importance of the CYP1A1 polymorphisms at exon 7 (Ile/Val) and 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) has been controversial in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) or head and neck SCC (HNSCC) denoting the value of exploring the correlation between these polymorphisms and risk of betel/smoking associated OSCC. It is also important to evaluate the association between CYP1A1 polymorphisms and susceptibility of oral precancerous lesion (OPL) to confirm the findings in OSCC cases.

Methods: We examined polymorphic prevalence of CYP1A1 at exon 7 (Ile/Val) and 3'-UTR in 106 cases with OSCC, 60 cases with OPL, and 146 controls.

Association between asbestos exposure, cigarette smoking, myeloperoxidase (MPO) genotypes, and lung cancer risk.

Background: As observed in tobacco-associated carcinogenesis, genetic factors such as the polymorphic metabolic/oxidative enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) could modulate individual susceptibility to asbestos-associated carcinogenesis.

Methods: RFLP-PCR analysis identified the MPO genotypes in 375 Caucasian lung cancer cases and 378 matched controls. An epidemiological interview elicited detailed information regarding smoking history and occupational history and exposures.

Objective: To study the variations in the NRAMP1 gene using five genotypes (274C/T, 577-18G/A, A318V, D543N and 3' untranslated region [UTR]), and the susceptibility of tuberculosis and HIV infection in Taiwanese.

Design: The study sample included 49 patients with tuberculosis, 48 healthy control subjects and 60 HIV-infected patients.

AIM:To study the relationship between trace element Mo and gastric cancer.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Soil samples were collected according to its type in different areas of Jiangxi Province; available molybdenum content in soil was measured by catalytic polarography and rank correlation method was used to analyse correlation between the mean of soil available molybdenum and mortality rate of gastric cancer in each county and city in Jiangxi Province. Gastric cancer cases were selected from the authors' hospital, occiput hair was collected to measure its molybdenum content with an atomic absorption spectrograph and controls were selected from the same hospital for comparison.

The COMT L allele modifies the association between MAOB polymorphism and PD in Taiwanese.

Objective: Reports suggest that catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT(L/L)) (Val(158)/Met) and monoamine oxidase B (MAOB) intron 13 genotype polymorphism is associated with PD. To understand the ethnicity-specific effects of genetic polymorphism, we performed a case-control study of the association between PD susceptibility and polymorphism of MAOB and COMT, both separately and in combination, in Taiwanese.

Methods: Two hundred twenty-four patients with PD and 197 controls, matched for age, sex, and birthplace, were recruited.

We investigated the specific sequence changes produced by the dietary mutagen 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo-[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) in UV5P3 cells [a Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line]. Sequence analysis of the PhIP-induced mutations in the adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (aprt) gene, which is heterozygous in the UV5P3 cells, can provide insight into the mutagenic mechanism in these repair-deficient cells expressing P4501A2. Two allele-specific 20 mer oligonucleotide primer pairs were used in the polymerase chain reaction and the allele of interest was amplified.
