The core@shell nanostars composed of star-like Au nanocores with TiO shells (Au@TiO NSs) are synthesized in a one-pot reaction without any reducing or surface-controlling agents. The Au@TiO NSs exhibit strong absorption in the UV region based on the interaction between the Au nanocore and the TiO shell, and this optochemical property leads to the efficient laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF-MS) analysis of small molecules with low background interference and high reproducible mass signals compared with spherical Au nanoparticles (NPs). The limit of detection and dynamic range values of various analytes also improved with Au@TiO NSs compared with those obtained with spherical Au NPs.

Successful integration of point-of-care testing (POCT) into clinical settings requires improved assay sensitivity and precision to match laboratory standards. Here, we show how innovations in amplified biosensing, imaging, and data processing, coupled with deep learning, can help improve POCT. To demonstrate the performance of our approach, we present a rapid and cost-effective paper-based high-sensitivity vertical flow assay (hs-VFA) for quantitative measurement of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a biomarker widely used for measuring acute cardiac damage and assessing cardiovascular risk.

Background: Free flap reconstruction of the lower extremity is technically challenging and may suffer from higher complication rates than other anatomical sites. One important vascular consideration in the reconstructive process is the microsurgical anastomotic technique, namely whether an end-to-end (ETE) or end-to side (ETS) technique is used. The ETS technique is often preferred by lower limb microsurgeons, who describe its benefits of improved distal perfusion.

Objective: This study assessed the feasibility of smartphone-based colposcopy (SBC) for visual inspection of the cervix by community healthcare workers in low-resource areas.

Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted in community villages in rural Vietnam, where 177 participants were enrolled for a cervical cancer screening. Cervical images were obtained by pre-trained community healthcare workers using a portable, upcycled SBC (Samsung Galaxy Note 20).

Background: Growing evidence suggests that cardiovascular disease develops over the lifetime, often beginning in childhood. Metal exposures have been associated with cardiovascular disease and important risk factors, including dyslipidemia, but prior studies have largely focused on adult populations and single metal exposures.
