Social comparisons are a core feature of human life. Theories posit that social comparisons play a critical role in depression and social anxiety triggering negative evaluations about the self, as well as negative emotions. We investigated the neural basis of social comparisons in participants with depression and/or social anxiety (MD-SA, n=56) and healthy controls (n=47) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Several modifiable risk factors for dementia and related neurodegenerative diseases have been identified including education level, socio-economic status, and environmental exposures - however, how these population-level risks relate to individual risk remains elusive. To address this, we assess over 450 potential risk factors in one deeply clinically and demographically phenotyped cohort using random forest classifiers to determine predictive markers of poor cognitive function. This study aims to understand early risk factors for dementia by identifying predictors of poor cognitive performance amongst a comprehensive battery of imaging, blood, atmospheric pollutant and socio-economic measures.

However, the effects of smokeless tobacco on brain volume and cortical thickness remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether the use of shammah, a nicotine-containing smokeless tobacco popular in Middle Eastern countries, is associated with differences in brain volume and thickness compared with non-users and to assess the influence of shammah quantity and type on these effects.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThere is a notable overlap between autism and eating disorders (EDs), and autistic individuals may experience poorer ED treatment outcomes than non-autistic peers. To make meaningful change in this field, it is imperative that we actively engage in co-production of research, however there are currently no guidelines to support co-production with autistic people with eating disorders. This paper reports on best practice guidelines that were co-produced across a series of workshops bringing together autistic people with EDs, researchers, clinicians, third-sector organisations, and parents/carers.
