We observe preferential cavity-mode selection in spontaneous emission by oriented molecules at the surface of a microparticle. Polarization-analyzed images of a levitated microdroplet containing surface active molecules reveal a well-defined system in terms of molecular position and orientation. The measured fluorescence spectrum is compared with that of a semiclassical emission-rate-enhancement model that treats the coupling between an excited state and Mie resonances as an oscillating dipole interacting with its self-scattered field.

Morphology-dependent resonances of microspheres sitting upon an index-matched single-mode fiber half-coupler are excited by a tunable 753-nm distributed-feedback laser. Resonance peaks in the scattering spectra and associated dips in the transmission spectra for the TE and TM modes are observed. We present a new model that describes this interaction in terms of the fiber-sphere coupling coefficient and the microsphere's intrinsic quality factor Q(0).

Morphology-dependent resonances (MDR's) of solid microspheres are excited by using an optical fiber coupler. The narrowest measured MDR linewidths are limited by the excitation laser linewidth (<0.025 nm).

Frequency selectivity of a novel type of multielement, multisection laterally coupled semiconductor laser array is studied using the round-trip method. It is found that such a structure should lead to a strong frequency selectivity owing to a periodic dependency of the threshold gain on the frequency. A gain-guided two-coupledcavity device was fabricated.
