Article Synopsis
  • Medication poisoning is a leading method of self-harm, with long-term studies needed to assess its mental health impact, especially post-COVID-19.
  • From 2018 to 2022, 756 self-harm cases were reviewed, showing a dip in 2020, but cases returned to pre-pandemic levels by 2021, with an increase in single-medication poisonings, particularly among youth aged 12-21.
  • Acetaminophen was the most common medication involved, and the findings suggest that young people with psychiatric issues are increasingly vulnerable, prompting a call for better mental health support and counseling in at-risk populations.

Cabergoline is a dopamine 2 receptor agonist used as first-line treatment of pituitary prolactinomas. Here, we describe the case of a 32-year-old woman with a pituitary prolactinoma who was treated with cabergoline for 1 year, during which time she developed delusions. We also discuss the use of aripiprazole to mitigate the psychotic symptoms, while maintaining the efficacy of cabergoline treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) can be a life-threatening condition linked to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), primarily seen in pediatric patients but also noted in a few adults.
  • This case series details two adult patients; one was a 60-year-old male with type II diabetes who developed severe complications leading to superior mesenteric artery occlusion, and the other a 41-year-old male with type I diabetes who exhibited signs of bowel ischemia.
  • Both patients required bowel resection and highlight the need to consider AMI as a diagnosis in adults experiencing unresolving acidosis during DKA treatment due to the high risk of mortality associated with AMI.

The transfer of a chemical product from its original container to an unlabelled secondary container by consumers is a potential health hazard that may result in unintentional exposures and intoxications. The aim of this study was to describe the pattern of prevalence of exposures to transferred products in Italy from year 2017, when the new European labelling regulation for chemicals became fully operative, to 2020, year of the coronavirus 19 disease first outbreak. Calls to the Poison Control Centre (PCC) of Policlinico Umberto I Hospital - Sapienza University of Rome were analysed retrospectively for characteristics, clinical presentation and circumstances related to the event.
