Implementation of SICS (small incision cataract surgery) in humanitarian campaigns: Description of the surgical technique and review of the literature.

The aim of this article has been, on the one hand, to describe the use of MSICS (manual small incision cataract surgery) for the management of cataracts, especially mature ones, in relation to its particular utility in the field of humanitarian campaigns, for which a description of the MSICS technique has been made, subsequently a review of the available scientific literature has been carried out to verify the results of this technique in comparison with phacoemulsification and extracapsular surgery and to describe the importance of teaching this technique to all cataract surgeons, especially the ones participating in humanitarian campaigns. According to what has been found, MSICS is an excellent surgical technique and according to current evidence it seems to be the choice over phacoemulsification and/or the classic extracapsular technique in hyper mature cataracts, especially in the field of humanitarian campaigns, due to its lower rate of complications and the improvement in visual acuity obtained. According to the studies found, it would be possible for the experienced ophthalmologic surgeon to implement this technique since the learning curve is short.

Humanitarian missions and visual outcomes in cataract surgery: A literature review.

The limited accessibility to ophthalmological services in remote regions of developing countries poses a significant challenge in visual healthcare. Cataracts and refractive errors are prominent causes of visual impairment, and surgery, despite being an efficient option, faces barriers in developing countries due to financial and geographical constraints. Humanitarian missions play a vital role in addressing this issue.

Topical ivermectin ointment treatment of Demodex blepharitis: a 6-year retrospective study.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy of topical ivermectin 1% ointment, for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis.

Methods: A retrospective study was designed to review electronic medical records of patients seen between January 2017 and December 2022, who had a diagnosis of Demodex blepharitis, treated with topical ivermectin 1% with at least 6 months of follow-up (Centro de Ojos Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina). The presence of collarettes was graded from 0 to 4.

Late-onset distal-apical intracorneal ring-segments keratopathy: an analysis of a large sample in a multicenter study.

Purpose: To review the prevalence and describe the characteristics, of cases with late-onset intracorneal ring segments (ICRS) keratopathy in a multicenter study.

Methods: A retrospective multicentric case-series study was performed in a specialized keratoconus service, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. An electronic clinical chart from patients with ICRS keratopathy between January 1999 and January 2019 was reviewed.

Logistics description of a high yield cataract surgery non-profitable expedition.

Purpose: To describe the logistics and methodology of a high yield surgical non-profitable campaign.

Methods: A descriptive study based on previous non-profitable campaigns dedicated to cataract surgery.

Results: The method is based on planification, finance acquisition, volunteer support, foreign affairs with the collaborating country where the surgeries are going to be performed, team organization, and overall, summoning all the stated items to materialize a global humanitarian campaign to eradicate cataracts by clinical and surgical procedures.
