Quercetin di-sodium salt (QDS), a water-soluble derivative of quercetin (Q), is a potent free radical scavenger. The aim of this study was to examine the in vitro intestinal transport of QDS compared to that of Q using the Caco-2 human intestinal epithelial cell line. The apical (A) to basolateral (B) transport of QDS was found to be higher than the B to A transport of this compound.

Grapefruit juice can modify the pharmacokinetic parameters of many drugs, in particular simvastatin, an orally active cholesterol-lowering agent. The exact components in grapefruit juice responsible for drug interactions are not perfectly known. However, it seems that bergamottin, a furocoumarin derivative, is one of the main active components within grapefruit juice.

Hydroxyflavones in alkaline solutions show high free radical scavenging activities. Quercetin, one of these hydroxyflavones may be submitted to chemical reactions yielding a mixture of mono-, di- and tri-sodium salts. These salts were recovered after solubilization and stepwise precipitation in methylalcohol/ethylacetate solvents.

Some semi-synthetic flavonoids, particularly derivatives of rutin, are used as therapeutic agents in the treatment of diseases involving free radicals. Here, for the first time, a complete study has been made of the relationship between the structure of such molecules and their superoxide, hydroxyl and peroxyl radical scavenging activity. The molecules chosen for this study were rutin, its aglycone (quercetin), and their methyl ethyl and hydroxyl-ethyl derivatives.
