Connecting Dynamics and Thermodynamics in Polymer-Resin Cured Systems.

This work connects the calorimetric responses of different rubber-resin blends with varying resin contents with their alpha relaxation dynamics. We used differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectroscopy to characterize the calorimetric and dielectric responses of styrene-butadiene, polybutadiene, and polyisoprene with different resin contents. To model the results, we used the Gordon-Taylor equation combined with an extension of the Adam-Gibbs approach.

Rigorous Policy Measurement: causal inference challenges and opportunities.

Epidemiologists are increasingly asking questions about the effects of policies on health and health disparities, generally using quasi-experimental methods. Researchers have developed a burgeoning body of rigorous methodological work focused on addressing potential inference challenges arising from modeling choices, study design, data availability, and common sources of bias in policy evaluations using observational data. However, epidemiologists have paid less attention to measurement and operationalization of policy exposures.

Comparison of three different cystatin C measurement procedures in a pediatric chronic kidney disease cohort: Calibration for longitudinal measurements and implications for clinical estimation of GFR.

Introduction: Serum cystatin C (CysC) is used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), including in the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKiD) Under 25 years (U25eGFR) equations. Several CysC measurement procedures available from diagnostic vendors include reference material for calibration, but the extent of heterogeneity across manufacturers is unclear. Since heterogeneity may have clinical and research implications for eGFR, we evaluated three CysC procedures in samples from the CKiD study representing a wide spectrum of kidney function.

Esophageal perforation following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is one of the most common spinal surgeries performed in the US but is associated with various morbidities. Esophageal perforation is one of the rarest complications of ACDF, but it is potentially fatal, therefore requiring timely detection and treatment. We present three cases of esophageal perforation after ACDF.
