This work presents the elemental, polysaccharide, and fatty acid compositions of benthic aggregates formed by the filamentous brown alga Acinetospora crinita, which are widely spread on the rocky bottoms of the Mediterranean Sea. The aggregates can be characterized as mineralized centers in which regeneration of nutrients and recycling of dissolved organic matter actively occur and favor the development of an abundant phytoplankton community. Analyses of the stable isotopes of C and N display their marine origin and could provide evidence of the processes that occur inside/outside of the aggregates.

T-tube removal after liver transplantation: a new technique that reduces biliary complications.

This article discusses a new simple, fast, and easily performed technique that allows reduction of morbidity and hospital stay after T-tube removal. A retrospective analysis was conducted of 145 recipients who underwent T-tube removal 3 months after orthotopic liver transplantation. Patients were divided in two groups: group 1 (n=93) underwent T-tube removal and contemporary placement under fluoroscopic guidance of a counter-drain.

Unsuspected choledochal cyst during laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Cystic dilation of the extrahepatic bile ducts is rarely encountered during elective biliary surgery planned for different indications. We report here on a patient with unremarkable preoperative workup and normal intraoperative anatomy of the cystic pedicle in whom a type I choledochal cyst containing a large stone was detected by the combined use of laparoscopic contact ultrasonography and intraoperative cholangiography. This case report highlights the importance of intraoperative imaging modalities of the ductal system not only in preventing iatrogenic injuries and their related complications, but also in detecting unsuspected associated biliary pathology which might significantly change the course of surgical intervention.
