The sense of smell is a central sensory modality of most terrestrial species. However, our knowledge of olfaction is based on vertebrates and insects. In contrast, little is known about the chemosensory world of spiders and nothing about how they perform olfaction despite their important ecological role.

Polygenic Risk for Substance Use Disorders as Predictors of Substance Use Initiation Among African American Youth.

Objective: Despite adverse health consequences associated with early substance use initiation, less is known about the influence of genetic risk on initiation and environmental characteristics that may moderate these associations, particularly among African Americans. We examined whether genetic risk for alcohol and cannabis use disorder, and nicotine dependence, is associated with age of initiation of these substances, and whether community disadvantage and parental monitoring moderate these associations in a sample of African American youth.

Method: Participants (n=1,017; 56% female) were initially recruited for an elementary school-based universal prevention intervention trial.

Objectives: Benzodiazepines (BZDs) activate the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) subtype A (GABAA) receptors, and thus are widely used medicines for the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. For chronic use, tolerance to BZDs is a major problem. Patients with chronic insomnia that develop tolerance to BZDs lose therapeutic effects but also potentially suffer from BZD dependence resulting in BZD withdrawal.

Opioid receptor antagonists reduce motivated wheel-running behavior in mice.

We hypothesized that opioid receptor antagonists would inhibit motivated behavior produced by a natural reward. To evaluate motivated responses to a natural reward, mice were given access to running wheels for 71.5 h in a multi-configuration testing apparatus.
