Diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs) are aggressive and fatal pediatric tumors of the central nervous system that are highly resistant to treatments. Lysine to methionine substitution of residue 27 on histone H3 (H3-K27M) is a driver mutation in DMGs, reshaping the epigenetic landscape of these cells to promote tumorigenesis. H3-K27M gliomas are characterized by deregulation of histone acetylation and methylation pathways, as well as the oncogenic MYC pathway.

We present the application of a photonic silicon chip-based optical sensor system for expeditious and phenotypic antifungal susceptibility testing. This label-free diagnostic assay optically monitors the growth of at varying antifungal concentrations on a microwell-structured silicon chip in real-time, and antifungal susceptibility is detected within 6 h, four times faster than in the current gold standard method.

Background: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained tachi-arrhythmia. Thrombus formation in the left atrial appendage (LAA) increases the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with AF.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare thrombin generation in the LAA to the LA among patients with AF.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on analyzing cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in plasma to gain insights into various pathological processes, specifically for cancer detection and profiling.
  • - A new assay, called EPINUC, uses single-molecule imaging to evaluate the epigenetics and protein biomarkers associated with nucleosomes from blood samples, enhancing the ability to identify active and repressive histone modifications.
  • - Testing with EPINUC on samples from patients with colorectal and pancreatic cancer, as well as healthy individuals, showed high accuracy in detecting cancer, even in early stages, while also determining the tissue origin of several tumor types.
