1,4-Diazidobuta-1,3-dienes (Z,Z)-10, 17, and 21 were photolyzed and thermolyzed to yield the pyridazines 13, 20, and 23, respectively. To explain these aromatic final products, the generation of highly strained bi-2H-azirin-2-yls 12, 19, and 22 and their valence isomerization were postulated. In the case of meso- and rac-22, nearly quantitative formation from diazide 21, isolation as stable solids, and complete characterization were possible.

The typical feature of their structure is a highly rigid and geometrically well-defined central unit composed of ethynylene substituted aromatic spacers with different numbers of amphiphilic segment groups (also of a rigid geometric design) attached to it. The molecules form well-defined Langmuir films when spread from a solution at the air/water interface or when a 10(-4) M aqueous CaCl2 solution was used as the subphase.

Upon reduction in a chloride-containing medium, OsO4 (1) affords the osmium(IV) species [OsCl5(H2O)]- (2), which could be isolated by extraction with n-tributyl phosphate (TBP).
