This article provides an overview of hidradenitis suppurativa, lichen planus, lichen sclerosis, calcinosis cuti, pyogenic granuloma, intertrigo, and seborrheic keratosis. This article also focuses on recognition and management of these pleomorphic afflictions of the perianal region.

Sacral neuromodulation for fecal incontinence in Latin America: initial results of a multicenter study.

Background: Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) is a widely used therapeutic option for fecal incontinence (FI). Larger series are mainly from Western countries, while few reports address the results of SNM in less developed or less wealthy countries. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of SNM in patients with FI in Latin America.

Rapid Recovery of Visual Function Associated with Blue Cone Ablation in Zebrafish.

Hurdles in the treatment of retinal degeneration include managing the functional rewiring of surviving photoreceptors and integration of any newly added cells into the remaining second-order retinal neurons. Zebrafish are the premier genetic model for such questions, and we present two new transgenic lines allowing us to contrast vision loss and recovery following conditional ablation of specific cone types: UV or blue cones. The ablation of each cone type proved to be thorough (killing 80% of cells in each intended cone class), specific, and cell-autonomous.

Experimental evaluation of a bovine pericardium-derived collagen matrix buttress in ileocolic and colon anastomoses.

Background: Anastomotic leakage is a major complication of colorectal surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare stapled ileocolic and colon-colon anastomoses with or without a collagen buttress derived from bovine pericardium in the immediate postoperative period.

Methods: Various stapling devices were used to create ileocolic and colon-colon anastomoses in a canine model.

Anastomotic sinuses after ileoanal pouch construction: incidence, management, and outcome.

Purpose: This study was designed to analyze the incidence, management, and outcome of pouch sinuses after ileal pouch-anal anastomosis at one institution.

Methods: We identified 282 ileal pouch-anal anastomosis patients between 1992 and 2002 who had a pouchogram before planned ileostomy closure. The management and outcome of patients with pouchograms revealing pouch sinuses were reviewed.
