Height outcome in congenital adrenal hyperplasia caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency: a meta-analysis.

Objective: To investigate adult heights attained by patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency and to perform a meta-analysis of height outcomes reported in this population.

Study Design: A retrospective chart review of our patients >5 years of age (n = 65) who were followed up from 1978 to 1998 for 21-hydroxylase deficiency was conducted. Final height (FH) SD scores and target height (TH) SD scores were determined.

Lower glycemic response to sucrose in the diets of children with type 1 diabetes.

Objective: To compare glycemic responses of isocaloric mixed meals containing 2% and 17% sucrose in children with type 1 diabetes who had fasting euglycemia.

Study Design: Nine children (11 to 16 years) with type 1 diabetes were randomized in a crossover design to receive 2 isocaloric diets (2% or 17% sucrose) in the Clinical Research Center. In the 2% sucrose diet, starch isocalorically replaced sucrose.

Multiple endocrinopathies in an infant with fatal neurodegenerative disease.

We report on a male infant with congenital hypoparathyroidism who developed primary hypothyroidism at 3 months and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus at 25 months. He had evidence of widespread and progressive neurologic dysfunction characterized by severe developmental delay, blindness, deafness, seizures, atrophy of the cerebellar and frontal lobes, and elevated spinal fluid protein. Also noted were renal hypoplasia, hyporeninemic hypoaldosteronism, chronic anemia, persistent elevation of liver transaminase levels, abnormal intraventricular cardiac conduction, reduction in numbers of helper T-cells, and distinctive facial anomalies.
