Key Clinical Message: Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) aided in the management of complex soft tissue injury in a 14-year-old girl by managing moisture, reducing oedema, and stimulating wound granulation less than 2 months after the accident and prepared the skin for skin grafting, thus successfully saving the limb.

Abstract: This case study describes the use of a tubular bandage encompassing the whole limb to deliver successful NPWT in the treatment and reconstruction of extensive soft tissue damage extending from the right lower extremity to the hip in a 14-year-old female.

A Process Model for IT Migrations in the Context of a Hospital Merger - Results from an Austrian Case Study.

In 2016, a new university hospital merged from three former independent Austrian hospitals started its operation. This paper presents a process model developed to coordinate the IT migration after the merger, using five phases to meet the requirements of the specific setting. A methodological mix of interviews, surveys and workshops was applied during the IT migration process.

Oligoarthritis caused by Borrelia bavariensis, Austria, 2014.

A case of Lyme oligoarthritis occurred in an 11-year-old boy in Vienna, Austria. DNA of Borrelia bavariensis was detected by PCR in 2 aspirates obtained from different joints. Complete recovery was achieved after a 4-week course with amoxicillin.

Early exposure to latex products mediates latex sensitization in spina bifida but not in other diseases with comparable latex exposure rates.

Background: The high prevalence of latex sensitization in patients with spina bifida (SB) has been attributed to repeated and early exposure to latex products. Other diseases such as gastroschisis/omphalocoele and post-haemorrhagic/congenital hydrocephalus are also associated with repeated and early latex exposure.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate whether the high prevalence of latex sensitization in patients with SB is rather related to the underlying disease itself than to disease-associated known risk factors.

Pre-term neonates are at high risk to develop early-onset sepsis which possibly is caused by an immature immune system. Monocytes play a pivotal role as professional phagocytic and antigen-presenting cells in the innate immunity. In the present study, we investigated in monocytes from cord blood the expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR as a marker for antigen-presenting capability, the expression of the high-affinity receptor for IgG (FcgammaRI/CD64), and the capacity to phagocytize non-opsonized Escherichia coli.
