Purpose: This study evaluated the psychometric functioning of a new criterion-referenced assessment of adolescent social communication, the Transition Pragmatics Interview (TPI), based on the synthesis model of pragmatics. Two ways of interpreting item difficulty were explored: (a) as a function of the synthesis model elements of social communication ability that items were designed to assess, and (b) as a function of the developmental level required for a successful response based on an adapted situational-discourse-semantics (SDS) model (Norris & Hoffman, 1993).

Method: Thirty-seven participants aged 14-22 years completed the TPI.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on establishing evidence-based practices for selecting criterion-referenced assessments by evaluating content validity of a new social communication assessment tool.
  • Two studies were conducted: the first involved experts rating the relevance of 25 new assessment items, and the second assessed how participants engaged with these items.
  • Results showed that 23 out of 25 items were valid according to experts and prompted appropriate thinking processes in examinees, suggesting that expert evaluations combined with participant feedback enhance the understanding of content validity in assessments.

Purpose: Theory of mind involves perceiving both the thoughts and emotions of others. Theory of mind skills continue to develop in school-age individuals. For children at risk for social communication difficulties, evaluating theory of mind is warranted to determine whether theory of mind should be a target of intervention.

RpS0/uS2, rpS2/uS5, and rpS21/eS21 form a cluster of ribosomal proteins (S0-cluster) at the head-body junction near the central pseudoknot of eukaryotic small ribosomal subunits (SSU). Previous work in yeast indicated that S0-cluster assembly is required for the stabilisation and maturation of SSU precursors at specific post-nucleolar stages. Here, we analysed the role of S0-cluster formation for rRNA folding.

Interventions to facilitate improvement in adolescent social communication are more effective when they are tailored to adolescents' individual profiles of ability. Current social communication assessments for adolescents are not designed to identify their profiles of ability for settings beyond compulsory education. To address this gap, we developed the Transition Pragmatics Interview (TPI).
