The coupling between bis(2-oxazolines) and two equivalents of aromatic aldehydes in the presence of catalytic amounts of NiCl affords an ester-imine product in synthetically useful yields. This virtually unknown, 100% atom-economic transformation involves the formal metathesis between the C=N double bond of the bis(2-oxazoline) moiety, which undergoes ring-opening, and the C=O double bond of the aldehyde. The scope of this transformation is studied, and a mechanism is proposed based on DFT calculations.

We develop a nonparametric Bayesian prior for a family of random probability measures by extending the Polya tree ($\mbox{PT}$) prior to a joint prior for a set of probability measures $G_1,\dots ,G_n$, suitable for meta-analysis with event-time outcomes. In the application to meta-analysis, $G_i$ is the event-time distribution specific to study $i$. The proposed model defines a regression on study-specific covariates by introducing increased correlation for any pair of studies with similar characteristics.

The selective permeability of the gut epithelial barrier is heavily reliant on the stability of cell junctions, often challenged by a variety of dietary stressors, including non-enzymatic cholesterol oxidation products (COPs). A marked decrease of the tight junctions claudin-1 and occludin, and of the adherens junction E-cadherin was previously detected in differentiated CaCo-2 monolayers challenged by a single addition of 7β-hydroxycholesterol (7βOHC) or 7-ketocholesterol (7KC) in the lowest micromolar range. However, in the diet, oxysterols are occurring in a mixture.

Oxysterols (OSs) represent a large family of cholesterol-derived molecules, involved in several physiological and pathological processes. Recently, we reported the remarkable antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) infection of three cholenamide or homocholenamide derivatives, namely PFM067, PFM064, and PFM069, identified by the screening of an in-house library of OS derivatives. With the aim to shed light on the antiviral mechanism of action of this class of molecules, we assumed to exploit the use of cholenamide-based fluorescent probes.

In laboratory medicine, due to the lack of sample availability and resources, measurements of many quantities of interest are commonly collected over a few samples, making statistical inference particularly challenging. In this context, several hypotheses can be tested, and studies are not often powered accordingly. We present a semiparametric Bayesian approach to effectively test multiple hypotheses applied to an experiment that aims to identify cytokines involved in Crohn's disease (CD) infection that may be ongoing in multiple tissues.
