The concepts of origami and kirigami have often been presented separately. Here, we put forth a synergistic approach-the folded kirigami-in which kirigami assemblies are complemented by means of folding, typical of origami patterns. Besides the emerging patterns themselves, the synergistic approach also leads to topological mechanical metamaterials.

Soft robots often draw inspiration from nature to navigate different environments. Although the inching motion and crawling motion of caterpillars have been widely studied in the design of soft robots, the steering motion with local bending control remains challenging. The rapid and constant development of deep learning (DL) strategies is pushing forward the quality of object segmentation in images from diverse fields of interest. In particular, these algorithms can be very helpful in delineating brain abnormalities (lesions, tumors, lacunas, etc), enabling the extraction of information such as volume and location, that can inform doctors or feed predictive models. Here, we describe ResectVol DL, a fully automatic tool developed to segment resective lacunas in brain images of patients with epilepsy.

Although coral bleaching is increasing worldwide due to warming oceans exacerbated by climate change, there has been a growing recognition that local stressors may play an additional role. Important stressors include the physicochemical and microbiological influences that are related to river runoff. Here, we investigated the microbiota associated to mucus and tissue of endemic coral Siderastrea stellata, collected from Brazilian northeast coral reefs of Barra de Santo Antônio (subject to river runoff) and Maragogi (minimal river runoff) during both the rainy and dry seasons.
