Serum hyaluronate correlates with histological progression in alcoholic liver disease.

Objectives: Chronic alcohol consumption may lead to the development of liver cirrhosis. Serum concentrations of hyaluronate were suggested as a predictor in chronic liver disease, but its power to distinguish between severity of fibrosis and inflammation had not been assessed. In order to evaluate hyaluronate as a marker to detect early stages of alcoholic liver disease and to establish a possible correlation with hepatic histology, serum concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay in 87 patients with biopsy-proven fatty liver, fatty liver and mild fibrosis, fatty liver and inflammation, severe fibrosis and inflammation, and cirrhosis, and in 12 non-alcoholic control subjects.

Avulsion fracture of the anterior superior iliac spine following apophysitis.

The case of an avulsion fracture occurring in an 18 year old athlete after repeated running is presented. The fracture involved the tensor fascia lata muscle and the external oblique abdominal muscle. It was treated by open reduction and internal fixation with two screws.

Electroencephalography in primary diagnosis of mild head trauma.

Objective: the aim of this study was to compare the clinical examination and EEG examination regarding their relevance in diagnosing cerebral function changes in early head trauma.

Methods: ninety four male patients who suffered from mild head trauma (GCS 13-15) were assigned into two groups. The first group fulfilled at least one sign of cerebral concussion (amnesia, anisocoria, changes of vigilance or vegetative symptoms such as vomiting), the second group did not.

Hepatic fibrosis in alcoholic liver disease often heralds progression to cirrhosis and, therefore, noninvasive parameters are required for early diagnosis and follow-up. Collagens VI and XIV, procollagen-III-N-propeptide, hyaluronic acid, and active transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) were measured in healthy volunteers, patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, and heavy drinkers without cirrhosis. Noncirrhotic alcoholics were assigned to two groups with either normal aspartate aminotransferase or levels > or = 2 normal.

Fractures of the hand skeleton are common injuries. These are or are associated with phalangeal fractures. Kirschner wires can be used for osteosynthesis, but can cause lesions of peripheral finger structures.
