Increased prevalence of colorectal adenomas in women with breast cancer.

Background: The frequency of colorectal adenomas and carcinomas was investigated in a large cohort of women with breast cancer in comparison with matched controls, since data on the occurrence of second tumors in women with breast cancer is controversial.

Design: In a cohort study, 188 consecutive women (median age 57 years) with primary breast cancer and 376 age-matched women who served as controls were examined by total colonoscopy. Breast cancer patients and controls were compared for the frequency of colorectal adenomas and carcinomas.

[Successful conservative management in two patients with a tracheobronchial rupture].

A 30-year-old woman with blunt chest trauma after falling from a horse appeared to have a haematothorax. Bronchoscopy showed a bronchial rupture of the posterior segment of the right upper lobe. As her condition was stable, a policy of expectant management was instigated.

Patients with bronchiectasis usually have chronic pulmonary infection with secondary obstructive airway disease. This disease has to be distinguished from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The diagnosis is established with the help of high resolution CT scan of the thorax.

A 66-year-old man was hospitalised because of pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He suffered from facial burns when he tested a cigarette lighter whilst on oxygen therapy by nasal prongs.
