Purpose: To investigate the anatomical and functional outcomes of acute-onset endophthalmitis after small-gauge vitrectomy.

Methods: Retrospective case series of patients who underwent 23- or 25-gauge vitrectomy at four centres in Sweden between 2008 and 2012. Postvitrectomy endophthalmitis was identified through the search of the journal records of each institution, and the diagnosis was based on clinical criteria regardless of culture results.

Unlabelled: PEDF (pigment-epithelium-derived factor) is a member of the serpin family of protease inhibitors. It is considered to be an important regulator of human eye disease and is known to inhibit angiogenesis. We have therefore investigated the presence of PEDF in the subretinal fluid of patients with retinal detachment.

Purpose: To compare the visual outcome after surgical removal of subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in patients younger and older than 50 years of age.

Methods: Patient records from all Swedish centers performing submacular CNV surgery were reviewed and 90 patients treated between 1992-1999 with a follow-up of 6 months or more were included. The results obtained in 49 patients aged 51-89 years (median=72 years) with neovascular disease caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) were compared with the outcome of 41 patients aged 6-49 years (median=36 years) with CNV secondary to non-AMD causes.

Aims: To follow visual acuity (VA) and progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) after phacoemulsification in diabetic patients with different stages of DR and controls.

Methods: This prospective study included 27 diabetic patients with no or mild to moderate non-proliferative DR; 25 patients with moderate to severe non-proliferative, or proliferative DR; and 22 non-diabetic controls. All patients underwent uncomplicated, phacoemulsification surgery, with implantation of a heparin-surface modified (HSM) poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) intraocular lens (IOL) into the capsular bag.
