- Gonorrhea is the 2nd most common STD in the US, with around 800,000 new cases annually, and a small percentage develop disseminated infections, more often in women under 40.
- A 36-year-old woman with polysubstance abuse had severe symptoms leading to a diagnosis of gonococcal endocarditis after blood cultures showed Neisseria gonorrhoeae, resulting in cardiac complications and her eventual death.
- Endocarditis is a rare but serious complication of gonorrhea, occurring in 1-2% of those with the disseminated form of the disease.
