High-resolution HLA matching in unrelated donor transplantation in Switzerland: differential impact of class I and class II mismatches may reflect selection of nonimmunogenic or weakly immunogenic DRB1/DQB1 disparities.

Unrelated donor searches in Switzerland require high-resolution HLA typing for HLA-A/B/C/DRB1/DRB3,4/DQB1 loci. We evaluated this strategy accepting donors with ⩾9/10 match. Of 802 unrelated donor transplants in 2000-2013, 570 were 10/10 matched, 31 were DRB3/4 mismatched, 261 were single-allele mismatched and 13 had 2 allele mismatches.

Related hematopoietic cell donor care: is there a role for unrelated donor registries?

In almost half of allogeneic hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) transplants, a related donor (RD) is used, yet a lack of standardized guidelines means that their care is heterogeneous. Changes to regulatory standards aim to improve uniformity, but adherence to these regulations can prove logistically difficult for the transplant centers (TCs) managing RDs. Discussion has ensued around possible alternative models of related donor care and a session at the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) annual meeting in 2013 debated the question of whether a role exists for unrelated donor registries in the management of 'related' donors.

Catalytic and mechanistic studies into the epoxidation of styrenes using manganese complexes of structurally similar polyamine ligands.

Two structurally similar polyamine ligands (7 and 8) have been prepared, which differ only by the presence of either a secondary or tertiary nitrogen donor within their N5 donor set. The ligands, in combination with iron and manganese salts, have been screened for their efficacy as catalysts for the epoxidation of styrene, using both hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid as oxidants. Clear differences in activity between the two systems were observed, with 7 proving most effective in the presence of MnSO4 with H2O2, whereas ligand 8 proved to be effective with Mn(OTf)2, MnCl2 and Mn(ClO4)2 using peracetic acid as the oxidant.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation: activity in Switzerland compared with surrounding European countries.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a highly specialised procedure used to treat malignancies of the lymphohaematopoietic system as well as some acquired and inherited disorders of the blood. This analysis by the Swiss Blood Stem Cell Transplantation Group, based on data from 2008-2011, describes, treatment rates in Switzerland for specific indications and compares this with data from Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, corrected for the size of the population. Differences in transplant rates, in rates for particular indications, and in the use of specific transplant technologies such as use of unrelated donors, use of cord blood or mismatched family donors are described.

Initial rate kinetic studies show an unexpected influence of para-substituents on the catalytic behaviour of manganese complexes of TMTACN in the epoxidation of styrenes with H2O2.

Investigations into the efficacy of a range of enantiomerically pure BINOL additives in the epoxidation of styrene substrates with a number of manganese catalysts prepared from the ligand 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, TMTACN, using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant have revealed that there are fundamental differences in reactivity between apparently similar systems. Whilst no asymmetric induction was obtained in the styrene oxide products formed, the data obtained from initial rate kinetic studies appear to be consistent with a number of different catalytically active species operating, the nature of which are profoundly affected by the starting materials used.
