First Successful Mechanical Splint for Obstructive Sleep Apnea With an Orally Administrable Pharyngeal Stenting Device.

We report the case of obstructive sleep apnea in a 19-year-old, otherwise healthy male presenting with persistent daytime sleepiness and nonrestorative sleep after velo- and uvuloplasty. An individually tailored prototype of an orally inserted pharyngeal stenting device was proposed in the framework of a first clinical feasibility trial. The noninvasive, easily self-administered device is mounted on a simple inferior dental guard.

[Neurinoma of the VIIIth cranial nerve with negative electrophysiological findings].

Electrophysiological features in acoustic neurinoma are reviewed. A case of an acoustic neurinoma with a normal BERA is reported. The authors conclude that no isolated electrophysiological sign is able to disclose a retrocochlear hearing loss.

[Current data on barotraumatic ear disease with isolated vestibular expression during apnea diving].

The authors have taken an interest in isolated vertiginous symptoms observed from free diving patients. In order to achieve a current bibliographic synthesis, they resume, on basis of 6 cases, the basic principles of the physics theories and the etiopathogenic mechanisms. They try so to help in the understanding of the vestibular clinical signs observed in this successful sport.

Surgical experience with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

A retrospective analysis was made of 24 cases of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma treated by the ENT Department of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre between 1975 and 1989. All the patients were male with an average age of 16. All were treated by surgery alone, with an average peri-operative blood loss of 1,784 ml; pre-operative embolization made no significant difference to the blood loss.

[A curiosity in ORL pathology: myiasis of the otorhinolaryngologic cavities].

The authors report a case of auricular myiasis with a review of literature. Diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic means established facing this parasitical disease are analysed.
