BACKGROUND Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that leads to multisystem complications. The heterogeneous course of sickle cell disease is due to both genetic modifiers and environmental factors. Cigarette smoking is a strong risk factor for sickle cell complications and even secondhand exposure to tobacco smoke can be detrimental for individuals with sickle cell disease.

A 33-year-old teacher from Ghana with no medical comorbidities and no relevant family history came to our pulmonology department with progressive difficulty in breathing, wheezing, and stridor for 6 months. Background/aim: Condylar fractures account for a large proportion (20% to 52%) of mandibular injuries. The goal of treating these fractures is to restore the occlusion, thereby re-establishing the masticatory function as close as possible to the patient's pre-trauma state. The aim of this study was to compare the bite forces following unilateral condylar fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with those managed by the closed method.
