Background: Music reduces stress responses in awake subjects. However, there remains controversy about the role of music or therapeutic suggestions during general anesthesia and postoperative recovery. We thus tested the hypothesis that intraoperative exposure to soothing music reduces the end-tidal concentration of sevoflurane (ETSevo) necessary to maintain bispectral index (BIS) near 50 during laparoscopic surgery.

It seems likely that fever associated with pyrogenic factors related to labor is suppressed by opioids, whereas it is expressed normally in patients given epidural analgesia. We examined this hypothesis and the possible etiology of temperature elevation in labor.

It thus seems unlikely that various human ethnicities have identical anesthetic requirements. Therefore, the authors tested the hypothesis that the minimum alveolar concentration of sevoflurane differs significantly as a function of ethnicity.

The effect of low-dose epidural opioid on bladder function remains unclear. We tested the hypothesis that adding low-dose fentanyl to epidural ropivacaine for patient-controlled labor analgesia does not promote urinary retention.

Unlabelled: Publications regarding anesthetic management for weight reduction surgery are scarce. We reviewed the records of 234 patients who underwent bariatric restrictive procedures (gastric bypass not included) from May 1999 to September 2000. Variables analyzed included demographics, anesthetic data and perioperative course.
