Article Synopsis
  • Advances in easy-to-use benchtop DNA synthesizers have made DNA synthesis more accessible to non-specialists, but this increased access introduces vulnerabilities, particularly through substitution attacks that threaten biosecurity.
  • The article examines the emerging issues in cyberbiosecurity, focusing on a new type of attack that bypasses traditional screening methods, and discusses the vulnerabilities present in current DNA screening algorithms.
  • It advocates for a comprehensive approach to cyberbiosecurity that includes improved screening processes and innovation to protect the safety and integrity of synthesized genetic material amid the growing use of DNA synthesis technologies.

We introduce a proof-of-concept extended reality (XR) environment for discussing cancer, presenting genomic information from multiple tumour sites in the context of 3D tumour models generated from CT scans. This tool enhances multidisciplinary discussions. Clinicians and cancer researchers explored its use in oncology, sharing perspectives on XR's potential for use in molecular tumour boards, clinician-patient communication, and education.
