Aim: Investigation of the incidence of wound healing disorders in operative material and that of possible commonality with the nosocomial categories of operations and with the surgical site infections registered by the authors, respectively. OPERATIVE MATERIAL AND METHOD: The data of 33,336 operations, made in their ward, are analysed by the authors. By way of introduction the question of nomenclature is discussed which is not uniform in the literature.

Number of cases of filariasis have been recently reported in the Hungarian medical literature, most of them caused by Dirofilaria repens . Dirofilaria repens is a mosquito-transmitted filarioid worm in the subcutaneous tissue of dogs and cats. Human infection manifests as either subcutaneous nodules or lung parenchymal disease, which may even be asymptomatic.

Surgical treatment for locally advanced cancer of the pancreas head with vascular invasion is controversial. It is regarded as a contraindication for resection by most surgeons, others perform resection involving the vessel. We performed pancreaticoduodenectomy with vascular resection in a 61 year old patient.

An infection register processing 905 surgical site infections followed after 33,426 operative interventions in a 20-year period between 1977 and 1996 is described. The preliminaries of modern infection surveillance both abroad and in Hungary are outlined. The method of registration and evaluation used by the authors are also outlined in details.
