Novel electroretinography devices to detect hydroxychloroquine retinopathy: study protocol for a diagnostic accuracy and feasibility study.

Introduction: Annual screening for hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy is recommended, and electroretinography (ERG) is considered a gold-standard test, but there are screening shortfalls and standard ERG is burdensome and has limited availability. Newer, portable ERG devices using skin-based electrodes may increase screening capacity but need validation. This study aims to determine initial device accuracies and feasibility of further research.

Photoacoustic and fluorescence dual-modality imaging of cerebral biomarkers in Alzheimer's disease rodent model.

Significance: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a predominant form of dementia that can lead to a decline in the quality of life and mortality. The understanding of the pathological changes requires monitoring of multiple cerebral biomarkers simultaneously with high resolution. Photoacoustic microscopy resolves single capillaries, allowing investigations into the most affected types of vessels.

Identifying potential predictors of surgical site infection risk following cardiac surgery: a scoping review.

Objectives: This scoping review was undertaken to identify risk predictions models and preoperative predictors of surgical site infection (SSI) in adult cardiac surgery. A particular focus was on the identification of novel predictors that could underpin the future development of a risk prediction model to identify individuals at high-risk of SSI, and therefore guide a national SSI prevention strategy.

Methods: A scoping review to systematically identify and map out existing research evidence on preoperative predictors of SSI was conducted in two stages.

Direct trifluoroethylation of carbonyl sulfoxonium ylides using hypervalent iodine compounds.

A novel study on the hypervalent iodine-mediated polyfluoroalkylation of sulfoxonium ylides was developed. Sulfoxonium ylides, known for their versatility and stability, are promising substrates for numerous transformations in synthetic chemistry. This report demonstrates the successful derivatization of sulfoxonium ylides with trifluoroethyl or tetrafluoropropyl groups, and provides valuable insights into the scope and limitations of this approach.

Training it Forward: The Role of Embedded Research Fellows in the Network of Scholars Program in Nova Scotia Comment on "Early Career Outcomes of Embedded Research Fellows: An Analysis of the Health System Impact Fellowship Program".

Kasaai et al describe the career trajectories of embedded scientists trained through the Health System Impact Fellowship (HSIF), showing that 37% of 2017-2019 HSIF alumni continue as embedded researchers in health systems. These findings suggest that the HSIF program effectively supports career readiness in health services and policy research (HSPR). Similarly, the Network of Scholars (NoS) program, launched post-pandemic in Nova Scotia, mirrors these results, with alumni continuing in embedded roles and mentoring a new cohort of learners from undergraduate to postgraduate levels.
