The αs2-casein is a phosphoprotein secreted in the milk of most mammals, and it is the most hydrophilic of all caseins. Contrary to genes found in ruminants, in donkeys two different encoding genes for donkey αs2-casein ( I and II) have been identified. However, unlike in ruminants, the variability at these loci has not been characterized in detail in donkeys until now.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe search for DNA polymorphisms useful for the genetic improvement of dairy farm animals has spanned more than 40 years, yielding relevant findings in cattle for milk traits, where the best combination of alleles for dairy processing has been found in casein genes and in . Nowadays, similar results have not yet been reached in river buffaloes, despite the availability of advanced genomic technologies and accurate phenotype records. The aim of the present study was to investigate and validate the effect of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the , , and genes on seven milk traits in a larger buffalo population.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most frequent neurodegenerative disease of the motor system that affects upper and lower motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness, spasticity, atrophy, and respiratory failure, with a life expectancy of 2-5 years after symptom onset. In addition to motor symptoms, patients with ALS have a multitude of nonmotor symptoms; in fact, it is currently considered a multisystem disease. The purpose of our narrative review is to evaluate the different types of pain, the correlation between pain and the disease's stages, the pain assessment tools in ALS patients, and the available therapies focusing above all on the benefits of cannabis use.
