Objective: To test the usefulness of the Parkinson's disease sleep scale (PDSS) in identifying sleep disorders in the clinical practice setting.

Methods: Sixty-two PD patients were evaluated with the PDSS and the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS). A cut-off of less than five for each PDSS item as an indicator of substantial sleep disturbance was chosen.

Objectives: To examine whether medical history and nasopharyngeal examination are useful for predicting obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and to compare these findings with those of the gold standard, polysomnography.

Design: Patients underwent polysomnography recordings for 2 nights and an otorhinolaryngologic examination, including flexible endoscopy and the Muller maneuver. Nasal and pharyngeal findings were scored in a semiquantitative way.

Sleep disorders may affect one out of two older Americans and may present as insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, or both. Age-related changes seem to cause a decreased need for sleep. The average 70-year-old sleeps only 6 hours a night, but may obtain an additional hour or even 2 during daytime naps.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term efficacy of an oral appliance, the Karwetzky activator, on respiratory and sleep parameters in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Those selected for this study were 26 patients polysomnographically diagnosed with mild-to-moderate OSA. They were initially treated successfully with this appliance, as documented by a second polysomnographic study after 6 to 12 weeks.

This case report details the treatment outcome of an oral appliance (OA) used in a patient suffering from excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) caused by an upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS). The patient demonstrated significant improvement in the multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) and the maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) after treatment with an OA. The presented case suggests that an OA may be considered as a further treatment option for UARS.
