Importance: In 2013, the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) reported that in 1708 patients with stable coronary disease and prior myocardial infarction (MI), oral multivitamins and multiminerals (OMVMs), in a factorial design with edetate disodium (EDTA) chelation therapy, did not reduce cardiovascular events relative to placebo OMVMs, but active EDTA combined with active OMVMs was superior to placebo OMVM/placebo EDTA.

Objective: To compare OMVM vs placebo in terms of efficacy for reducing major adverse cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes and prior MI.

Design, Setting, And Participants: The TACT2 randomized, multicenter double-masked 2 × 2 factorial clinical trial took place across 88 sites in the US and Canada.

Torrefaction is a thermochemical pretreatment that enhances biomass properties, improving energy density, decomposition resistance, and hydrophobicity, making it a viable alternative as biofuel. This study performed a thermodynamic assessment of the torrefaction process for urban forest waste, integrating experimental data with two-step reaction kinetic modeling to evaluate the torrefaction product yields and properties using Aspen Plus software. The process was modeled with a yield reactor, employing the Peng-Robinson equation to describe vapor-phase behavior and empirical correlations to predict solid-phase properties.

This study investigates the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) with a 660-nm laser on nerve regeneration and muscle morphometry following median nerve axonotmesis in rats. Sixteen Wistar rats were divided into a control group and laser-treated group, with the latter receiving 10 applications of PBM (660 nm; 20 mW; 10 J/cm; 0.4 J; and 20 s) over 2 weeks.

Dynastor Doubleday, [1849] (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Brassolini) is an exclusively Neotropical genus, occurring from Mexico to Argentina. Adults have crepuscular habits, while the larvae are unique in Brassolini in feeding on bromeliads (Bromeliaceae). Until now, Dynastor contained three species, nine subspecies, and five synonyms (two of them generic synonyms).

Article Synopsis
  • Cushing's disease (CD) co-occurring with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is rare and makes diagnosis challenging due to CKD-induced hypercortisolism; this report presents three female cases to improve understanding of diagnosis in such contexts.
  • Each patient, aged between 12 and 16, had various CKD-related conditions and presented symptoms typical of CD, which were confirmed through clinical and biochemical evaluations; surgical interventions led to remission, but some patients developed pituitary deficiencies.
  • These cases highlight the need for careful clinical assessment in diagnosing CD among CKD patients, as clear diagnostic criteria are currently lacking.
