Cavernous hemangioma arising from the gastro-splenic ligament: a case report.

We present a rare case of a 45-year-old woman who presented with epigastric pain associated with early satiety and weight loss. Imaging revealed a large intra-abdominal mass in the epigastrium. Despite intensive investigations, including ultrasound scanning, computed tomography, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and percutaneous biopsy, a diagnosis could not be obtained.

Routine use of gastrograffin enema prior to the reversal of a loop ileostomy.

Background/aims: Anastomotic failure occurs in up to 10% of patients following anterior resection. Selective use of a loop ileostomy may reduce the septic consequences of anastomotic leak. The use of gastrograffin enema to confirm the anastomotic integrity prior to ileostomy closure is still controversial.

Epithelial molecular markers in the peripheral blood of patients with colorectal cancer.

Despite the modest improvements in patient survival from colorectal cancer in the last few decades, the overall five-year survival rate remains at 40 to 45 percent. Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for colorectal cancer; however, nearly one-half of all patients who undergo a potentially curative resection will relapse because of undetected micrometastasis. The fact that the overall survival rate remains poor strongly suggests that the dissemination of these cells occurs early in the disease process and emphasizes the need for finding feasible diagnostic methods with sufficient sensitivity and specificity.
