Two potential probiotics Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus plantarum were evaluated for use in aquaculture as preventive measures against vibriosis. In vitro evaluation of the probiotics using co-culture assays with the pathogen Vibrio anguillarum and testing for the production of antibacterial substances showed the presence of antagonism and confirmed the production of antibacterial substances. Both potential probiotics were administered to the live fish feed Artemia franciscana nauplii, offering protection against a subsequent challenge of the nauplii with the fish pathogen V.

Lavandula stoechas, a native plant of Greece, is rich in essential oil and fenchone is its major constituent. We examined the effect of the essential oil and its main constituents on soil metabolism and microbial growth. Addition of the essential oil or fenchone to soil samples induced a remarkable increase in soil respiration.

The present study constitutes the first attempt to construct a photographic map of the polytene chromosomes of Dacus oleae, a pest of the olive tree that causes serious financial damage in all olive oil producing countries. The map was constructed by using the larval fat body cells, the chromosomes of which are representative of the polytene chromosomes of other polytene tissues. In addition, the mitotic chromosomes of brain ganglia were examined, permitting tentative correlations between mitotic and polytene elements.

A survey of Bacillus thuringiensis recovered from the environments of olive groves in Greece was carried out. Of 80 soil samples, 24 were found to contain B. thuringiensis with parasporal crystal inclusions; these were tested for toxicity against the olive fruit fly (Dacus oleae).
