A report of iliac muscle abscess due to Mycobacterium bovis after bacillus Calmette-Guerin therapy for bladder cancer.

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is traditionally used for vaccination against tuberculosis. BCG vaccine contains live attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis. Intravesical BCG is also effective in treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Bactericidal activities of DU-6859a and clinafloxacin (CI-960) against staphylococci.

Time killing curves were calculated at concentrations of 2 and 8 times the MICs of DU-6859a and clinafloxacin against six isolates of Staphylococcus aureus. Both quinolones produced a decrease in the log10 CFU per milliliter of > or = 3 within 3 h at 2 and 8 times the MIC for the ciprofloxacin-susceptible isolates and at 8 times the MIC for the ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates; however, only 8 times the MIC of DU-6859a consistently prevented regrowth of all isolates after 24 h of incubation.

Effect of inhaling heated vapor on symptoms of the common cold.

Objective: To test the efficacy of steam inhalation in treating common cold symptoms.

Design: An in vitro study determined the temperature that inactivated rhinovirus: a temperature of 43 degrees C lasting at least 1 hour was needed. We then conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized in vivo study.

Mycobacterial skin disease: approaches to therapy.

Many mycobacteria, including M tuberculosis, M leprae, and several atypical organisms, produce skin disease. Chemotherapy is necessary for most infections. Surgery may be helpful for some atypical infections.

Activity of new quinolones against ciprofloxacin-resistant staphylococci.

Because of the development of newer fluoroquinolones with improved activity against gram-positive organisms, we elected to compare the inhibitory properties of ofloxacin, temafloxacin, sparfloxacin, PD131628, PD127391, and WIN57273 against 105 ciprofloxacin-resistant staphylococci. Based on comparison of MICs for 90% of the organisms (MIC90s), WIN57273 was the most active agent against oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; the MIC90 was 0.5 microgram/ml.
