First attempt to analyse radiation modifying action of 52 compounds--derivatives of 1,4-dihydropyridine is presented. Many of these compounds have electrodonating and antioxidative activities. Local radioprotective effects of the substances has been studied using experimental model with partial beta- and X-rays exposure of sole skin in rats to doses of 40 and 30 Gy.

The paper summarizes the results of studies into the modifying effect of some 1,4-dihydroisonicotinic acid (1,4-DHINA) derivatives during chemical mutagenesis in eukaryotic organisms. The compounds under study are effective in reducing the incidence of point and chromosomal mutations induced by ethylmethane sulfonate (EMS) in Drosophila sex cells, displaying the specificity of the influence depending on some factors. The effects of these antimutagens on the formation and repair of chromosomal breaks were studied during mutagenized sperm storage in Drosophila female receptacula semenis.

The experiments on focal penicillin-induced epileptic activity in the brain cortex (Wistar rats) and bicuculline- and thiosemicarbazide-induced seizures (Icr:Icl mice) showed that the glutapyrone possessed a significant antiepileptic activity. As previously shown, that glutapyrone has an influence on 45Ca2+ uptake by rat cortical synaptosomes (evoked by K+ depolarization) as compared with nifedipine and nimodipine, and it was effective in pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures in rats and mice. The mechanism of action of convulsants is associated with the disturbance of different links of GABAergic inhibition.

Intravenous cerebrocrast, 1 g/kg/min, and nicardipine, 0.5 g/kg/min, given to cats during 60 min one day after cerebral hemorrhage were found to produce an improvement of cerebral blood supply and oxygen consumption along with a moderate fall of blood pressure. The favourable effect of cerebrocrast on brain oxygen and carbohydrate metabolism was mediated by increased brain blood supply.
