Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are polymeric structures formed by the self-assembly of oppositely charged polymers. Novel biomaterials based on PECs are currently under investigation as drug delivery systems, among other applications. This strategy leverages the ability of PECs to entrap drugs under mild conditions and control their release.

Article Synopsis
  • * A new preparation method is introduced that allows for faster fractionation of CNCs with varying surface charges and shapes right after hydrolysis, improving control over film properties.
  • * Comparing films made from different CNC fractions showed notable differences in self-assembly behaviors and structural colors, validating the effectiveness of the new CNC harvesting protocol.

Aerodigestive fistula (ADF) is defined as a pathological connection between the upper digestive tract and the airway. ADF is associated with high morbidity and mortality and management is often complex. A cohort study including all patients admitted with ADF 2004-2022 at a single tertiary esophageal surgery center was performed based on prospectively collected administrative data and retrospectively collected electronic patient chart data,.

Kraft lignin, a by-product from the production of pulp, is currently incinerated in the recovery boiler during the chemical recovery cycle, generating valuable bioenergy and recycling inorganic chemicals to the pulping process operation. Removing lignin from the black liquor or its gasification lowers the recovery boiler load enabling increased pulp production. During the past ten years, lignin separation technologies have emerged and the interest of the research community to valorize this underutilized resource has been invigorated.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is an emerging infection causing CNS infection of various severity. Good knowledge of the incidence in the population and defined risk areas is important in risk communication and vaccination recommendations. The aim of this study was to investigate potential underreporting by retrospectively diagnose TBE among patients with viral CNS infections of unknown etiology in a region with emerging risk areas for TBE, and define variables associated with performed TBE serology at the time of infection.
