Background: animal studies have shown that enteral stimuli play an important role in modulating gut-associated lymphoid tissue.

Objective: the main objectives of this study were 1) to evaluate the effect of 3-day fasting on secretory immunoglobulin A (S-IgA) in parotid saliva and 2) to determine the levels of lymphotoxin (LT) transcription in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMNC) from healthy volunteers as a proxy for studying GALT health.

Methods: these adult volunteers had fasted for three days as part of a cultural ritual.

Article Synopsis
  • The World Health Organization advises that adults should consume less than 2000 mg of sodium daily, but the Mexican population, similar to many around the world, exceeds this recommendation and often lacks adequate potassium intake.
  • This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) related to sodium intake among a Mexican population and to investigate how these factors correlate with actual sodium and potassium excretion through urinary tests.
  • Results showed that 232 participants (mainly women) had high urinary sodium levels (2582.5 mg/day) and inadequate potassium levels (1493.5 mg/day), with a notable difference in the awareness of sodium consumption between genders, as more men were unaware of their sodium intake compared to women

Soldiers of the Mexican Army with obesity were subjected to an intense 60-day weight-loss course consisting of a controlled diet, daily physical training, and psychological sessions. The nutritional treatment followed the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) recommendations, incorporating elements of the traditional diet in the nutritional intervention. The total energy intake was reduced by 200 kcal every 20 days, starting with 1,800 kcal and ending with 1,400 kcal daily.

  • * A study analyzed 616 patient records in a hospital in 2021, finding that 69.5% were at nutritional risk using the NRS-2002 screening tool, while 87.8% met the GLIM criteria for malnutrition.
  • * The study revealed strong agreement between the NRS-2002 and GLIM criteria (κ= 0.732) and significant differences in anthropometric measurements between patients with varying levels of malnutrition, highlighting the pressing issue of malnutrition in hospitalized patients in Mexico

Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in modulating immune responses, including effector response to infection and surveillance of tumors. This article summarizes the current scientific evidence on the effects of supplementation with prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics on high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, precancerous lesions, and various stages of cervical cancer development and treatment while also examining the underlying molecular pathways involved. Our findings indicate that a higher dietary fiber intake is associated with a reduced risk of HPV infection, while certain probiotics have shown promising results in clearing HPV-related lesions.
